I completely agree with this, though a perfect situation would get JR in ASAP, and still sit for this season. It's his career. See "Cane's" post below:
I was wrong in my earlier post about a team holding a rookie's rights until he was eligible to become a free agent. Here's what I found on another web site: How does the NFL Draft impact the Salary Cap? Answer: Team salary includes the Rookie Minimum Active Salary as of the day of the draft for all drafted rookies. The salary for drafted rookies will stay at this amount until the player is signed, the team’s rights are relinquished through waivers, or until the Tuesday following the tenth week of the regular season if the player remains unsigned.
that makes sense, as the holdouts have to appear by the 10th week of the season in order to not lose that season as a year of experience, which is important in their free agency status.
It's not good for his chances of starting in September, but Russell is in business for himself now, and has to protect his career interests. He has good agents, presumably, and should not let himself be cheated.
You have to get6 all you can, especially if you are the number one pick. He could be a flop, might as well get all he can get. Everyone hated Quinn for doing it, but why not (Though he didnt have to be a girl about it)? As for the Raiders, so JMar tells them what he will and will not sign for March and tells them if they can't do that dont pick him. Are the Raiders THAT stupid?
Apparently so. The contract for a #1 overall QB is pretty well defined, and the Raiders still picked him. It was also no secret that they wanted him. Now they're just trying to jam him, and show the world what a hapless organization they've become. "Just finish last in the West."
I'm for JaMarcus. Look, Davis already has his millions; he's got a lot more than JaMarcus likely ever will, unless he becomes an endorsement machine like Tiger or Jordan, which is not likely IMO. Davis is trying to go cheap on a top quality guy, which is part of the Raiders problems the last decade. JR should stick to his guns. If he sits out a year and takes less money, at least he won't have to put up with Al's crap! And maybe he could get an o-line in front of him.
Okay here is where I break from the pack. I am a die hard LSU fan and I love JR, ..... BUT. The number of #1 overall picks, first round picks, heisman winners, blah blah blah that have turned out to be total flakes in the NFL far out number the ones who turned out to be great NFL football players. Yeah I understand the business however if I were commish I'd lay it down like this. "Rookie", "You get min $$ until you prove your worth" I mean are we serious? 27 mil vs 31 mil? What would the majority of you do with 12, 8, 4 even 2 million? Probably go completely outside of your minds. I know I would. So forget the fact that he got drafted by a crappy team and take a step back and put it all into perspective. It's a joke and thats why I love college football.
If I was looking at my earnings over the rest of my life with the occupational hazards that could limit it- not to mention the pain from wear and tear in the NFL and the suffering when my playing days were over.........I'd say there's a lot of difference tween 4, 8, and 12 mill. With 2 mil, after taxes, I'd buy a nice home, nice vehicle, second vehicle and a niceboat, put some away for kids' college, put some away for retirement days, invest some.......and worry.....still cause a million dollars ain't what it used to be in this society. With 8 mill, I'd buy a bigger home, a fancier vehicle, a yacht, put more away for kids' college and some to help them after college, put more away for retirement, invest more and not worry too much. With 12 mill.........you get the point. Most noteworthy is his earning potential in life after the NFL and don't forget a huge chunk will go to uncle sam. :thumb:
