I wasn't upset at Saban leaving LSU, he wanted to coach in the pro's. I didn't like him returning to the SEC, but when he began taking credit for LSU's players the day after the Sugar Bowl (I don't care how bama posters here spin it, it was classless to do it the day after LSU's win) and then with the comments he made on the recruiting trail, I lost some respect for him. And it's obvious that LSU and BR mean nothing to him. Now more than anything, it's the bama fans with their constant claims that Saban deserves all the credit for LSU's successes, and Miles is an idiot, that I want to see eat their words. I hope he ends up like Dietzel, at the end of his career, he looks back and realizes that the biggest mistake he ever made was leaving LSU
Terry Saban still comes in town to visit my dad's partner and family. They have mentioned many times how she feels about Baton Rouge and LSU. Saban could hate LSU now, who knows but that would be kinda hard with your wife so attached.
I'm willing to bet, as long as Saban has any role in college football threads like this will continue. Let's assume in 10 years he takes a role with one of the sports networks during the bowl season. The same feelings expressed now, and over the last year, will be expressed then. NOW, you guys may be different than a lot of fans. However, I don't think so. Granted, the ole' Elephant's never forget, so for us to talk about Curry, Perkins, fRan, Ears, Wallace, Thomas...it's part of having a history in college football and part of being a fan. As a specific example, when Curry hits the airwaves on ESPN I tend to hit the mute button quickly...or change the radio channel. While he has a reputation of being a "good guy" and a "discipline oriented coach" they feel (as does he) he has a right to discuss issues around the NCAA. Oh, never mind the things he fostered when he was on campus. Don't get me wrong. I can say I had a little smirk on my face when I watched what aTm received and dealt with when they hired fRAn. It's part of the game and part of being a fan. Last thought...we've had coaches that left Alabama and coached at Auburn. It wasn't about disliking the move, it was about the school and the rivalry. Although, when thinking about Oliver, I can't say I feel very much respect for him as well with his underhanded dealings with Stallings. BUT, I don't hold him ill will for Stallings leaving... Come football season, the Saban/Bama threads will be back in the same number here...just as the Miles/LSU threads will be on Bama forums. NOW, if we could do something about some of the idiotic posters that jump into those threads THAT would be an accomplishment.
I didnt hate Saban for leaving LSU either, I understand the business side. But if he really felt it in his heart so strong after his very short NFL gig...why in the hell would he talk s*** about Louisiana people? The fact that he did downgrade us, is why I enjoy his demise. No ex Bama coach ever, mocked a Alabama fans heritage.
Good post Terry. :thumb: I find it amazing how some Bama fans claim LSU is unrealistic then call Francione fRan. While the circumstances are different, you're right, fans are fans just about everywhere. I would have felt different if Saban would have went in another conference, or to a lesser team, that's why Spurrier to SC didn't bother Fla fans as much. If Saban would have went to Ole Miss, I think the reaction would have been somewhat different, so I think that's a compliment to bama, we take them serious. But I can tell you, to me, he showed his true colors with his statements and actions after he was hired at bama. While we can argue whether what he said was true, and what he did recruiting was in bounds, it showed a certain lack of class and that LSU meant nothing to him.
I don't hate him. I think it's funny how everyone on that 2003 team can come back to LSU and visit, go in the locker room, revisit some of the places that they may have spent time during that 2003 season. They will always be welcomed at LSU... Nick Saban, on the other hand... I don't think Alabama would like it's coach gazing longingly at a trophy in LSU's trophy case or visiting LSU's campus. I also don't think that people would casually walk by and not rag him if they saw him on campus. That's the funny part, other than his ring, he can't really have much else about that 2003 season.
There is a difference... Saban at Alabama has to go up against an LSU program that is cruising. Saban at LSU had to go up against an Alabama team that suffered an NCAA death blow and coaching scandals. Saban is currently a coach that can put together an SEC run, but so can Miles, Tubby, Petrino, Nutt, and we could possibly even end up hearing cowbells in the Georgia dome. Right now, Saban does have the luxury of a yearly match-up with Tennessee, a team that is not where it was in the 90s. Meanwhile Auburn, at the moment, doesn't appear to be a team ready to peak any time soon. I believe that Saban will have a window in 2009 to either get it done or walk. If nothing happens before the end of the 2010 season, I think Saban will definately be toast at Alabama.
