Vernon said he wasn’t surprised that Franks committed to LSU. But he was caught off guard by the timing.
“It caught me off guard a little bit,” he said. “We figured he would go into the middle to late summer and make his decision then. But he told us he knew where he wanted to be, and he knew that was the decision he felt good about. He said there was no need to wait. I was ecstatic for him. And you couldn’t ask for more than a top five program in the country, year in and year out.”
One reason that Vernon wasn’t surprised that LSU beat out the likes of Georgia, Alabama, Florida State, and many others was because of Cameron.
“Coach Cameron came in and spent an afternoon with us and what a great guy,” said Vernon. “I deal with a lot of college coaches, but I’m just a high school coach. He never one time made me feel like I was lesser than him. For a guy with his credentials to be that personable, it’s easy to see why Feleipe felt so at home with him and coach Miles.”
As impressive as Cameron has been, Vernon said Miles deserves a lot of credit as well.
“He is as personable of a guy as you will come across,” stated Vernon. “He has an intense personality, but a lot more personable than a lot of guys I have met. I met
Nick Saban and a few other guys, and coach Saban was a personable guy too. But there is just something about coach Miles and his staff.”
As good of a job as LSU did in recruiting his star quarterback, Vernon said Tiger fans can expect that same type of effort from Franks as he helps to build on a class that is already ranked No. 2 in the country by 247Sports.
