The wind just keeps changing directions.

It would appear as though the bid to save the conference has indeed failed. That's just from reading aTm, UT, 7 OU sites along with the ESPN article and tweets from those close to those programs.

Dangit, SEC may be getting some new blood. :/

I agree, I think the arrogance of the Pac 10 and Big 10 need to be slapped around. Thinking they can just come in and raid other conferences for their own financial gains. My only concern is will there be any fallout from these schools like Mizzu and aTm that actually were contemplating leaving. Will these teams along with the rest of their division have a united conference or will it be a conference divided. With some members only staying because they were pressured. Remember Mizzu is who started this who thing with its talks of going to the Big 10 some time ago. I can see the Big 10 and the Pac 10 growing to 12 in order to set up a conference championship, and to keep pace with the conferences that do. The Big 12 would have to find 2 more members which I don't see that being a problem for them. They could pretty easily grab the likes of TCU, Utah, or BYU, putting them back to the Big 12. Of course then comes the problem of what does the Big 10 call itself now that it has 12 members. I am certain the Big 12 would retain its conference name should they grow back to 12 members. JMHO

Not sure the Big Ten needs to be "slapped down", unless you want to blame them for the media-hype. They announced their intention to expand, which they probably should have done by finding a second school when PSU joined back in 1994 (actually came up during the the SEC expansion plans).... now Nebraska is in and the Big Ten is obviously taking a wait and see attitude by backing off Missouri. It's the PAC 10 who had the 72 hour bulletin and seems to be the only conference jumping all the way to 16 teams in haste.
I'm not sure what else the Big Ten should have done other than acknowledge their intent publicly and move forward.

Except the Pac-10 wants to both expand AND have no part of a conference championship game. If the NCAA agrees to that then the BCS should smack down the Pac-whatever's number of BCS bowl-eligible teams.

Ultimately this is about one thing: the Big 10 cornering Notre Dame into joining the Big 10. By making their desires to expand public, they set everything in motion. The hope is that a lot of Notre Dame's natural rivals end up in super conferences and are thus unable to schedule Notre Dame as usual. Also, if things go extremely well then Notre Dame's conference affiliation for other sports is in danger too. Due to that conference being torn apart.

This is turning into a huge cluster F. On the other hand it is a nice little distraction from the normal boredom around this time waiting for football to start.

I would respectfully argue that this is about more than just Notre Dame.

    Much more.
