I think this is great and I've been waiting for this for quite some time. I'm all about the rivalry and I think this will do great things for Louisiana football as a whole. That, and I just love the thought of the Superdome filled with LSU fans! :geauxtige
This is only good if LSU doesn't view the game in New Orleans as a road game. If we can still play a true road game against a BCS conference opponent in the years we are playing in New Orleans, then it's a GREAT idea. If this costs us the opportunity to schedule the big teams, then this was really stupid.
I keep hearing about.... "Well how many times do you get the chance to have a road game where you control at least 40,000 seats ? This is great for us" How is this better than having a home game where we control 85,000 seats ? What about the 22,000 fans that would have gone to a game in Tiger Stadium that now CAN NOT because the dome hold 22,000 less fans ? Multiply that 22,000 by 5, and you have lost more than an entire home games worth revenue. That's what 4 - 5 million dollars ? The bottom line is that Skip's has some friend over at Tulane, and he feels the need to stroke their jock for them. This whole thing smells like the good 'ole boy network is back in full effect. Skip may have been great as the baseball coach, but he SUCKS ASS as an AD, and I can't wait for him to retire.
Put it this way - LSU is always going to try to play two cupcake games every year. So for me, I'd much rather see LSU play Tulane and Rice every year than play Appalachian State or Western Carolina. That being said, I was hoping Radakovich and Skip would play 3 for 1 deals with Tulane and Rice, but actually one would be a 1 for 3 so you don't have two road games against these teams in the same year. Plus playing Tulane and Rice serves two purposes. It's a rent a win and it gets a large amount of media coverage and other publicitiy into the New Orleans and Houston markets which only helps recruiting. The way the Athletic Admin. brokered this deal isn't the best but it's fine by me. Now I'd like to see them do the same thing with Rice and try to play at Reliant Stadium, but that'll likely cost way too much. And Rice Stadium holds like 70K, so maybe they could work something out. Then they should look to play a mid to low level BCS conference school like Indiana, Duke or Kansas. And then have the one big game against a top notch opponent. This way there's no I-AA teams and you bring back the traditional rivalry teams and it's guaranteed wins.
That's garbage. Tulane is our one true rivalry, and I'm glad to have them back on our schedule. They're the only school that hates us as much as we hate them. And I'm probably in the minority, but I hope Tulane becomes more competitive in football so it will make the rivalry even more intense. I'd rather make the trip to New Orleans every other year versus watching some crappy out-of-state team play in Tiger Stadium, even if I struggle to get tickets. And LSU gets to make money while playing a road game.
LSU LOSES money by playing that road game. They could make a lot more money if that game was at home.
You're right .... we should play all 4 OOC games at home against crappy out-of-state teams so we can make MORE money. But then you would bitch about that as well...
To me... Playing a crappy out-of-state team is no different than playing a crappy in-state team. So.....we may as well make as much money as possible doing it. Call it bitching if you want. I am stating my opinion just like everyone else on this board. I'm just not being a prick about it like you are.
Now we will probably be playing 4 OOC games against bad competition, only we will do some of it on the road as well. The single redeeming quality about this deal is the road games against Tulane are much better financially than most other road games we would do. So maybe, just maybe we can still manage to go on the road against some bigger BCS teams in the same year we go on the road to face Tulane. I think having Tulane on the schedule vs. say Applachian State or Utah State is a much better thing. That I would consider an upgrade. However, if you compare having a home and home vs. Tulane to having a home and home with Oklahoma, Ohio State, Michigan, or any of the top teams, I think the deal stinks. I think we may have sacrified any chance at a top matchup by going to New Orleans every other year.
No, the reason LSU agreed to the deal is because this is one of the few instances when LSU can make money from an away game. Since New Orleans is so close, transportation costs are minimal and we are guaranteed the number of seats that we need in order to make a profit. This is better than a rent-a-win at home because we don't have to pay Tulane every other year to come to Death Valley - it's all profit. We also don't lose money on a "road game" and can increase our total net profits. As far as your other comment that your stating your opinion without being a prick, I disagree.
