I'm not saying she was fired for being gay, read my post. I'm just serving up what most people are thinking. None of the exact details have been released and may not be until Coach Chatman writes a book, only then will we really know the true story. If she had a relationship with a player, then that is wrong. If she and a player fell in love then that could be another story. I'm not saying being gay is a mental illness or birth defect. We as a society put labels on anyone different. God creates us all different and we screw it all up. It's so sad that we cannot except everyone with out any type of prejudice. There's nothing to fear but fear itself. That goes for competing in sports as well.
The latest on the Pokey resignation. "Carla Berry, who has been an assistant for the Lady Tigers since 1999, first reported the allegation to university officials outside the athletic department. After determining that no current players appear to be involved, the university made athletic department officials aware of Berry's allegation. Multiple sources within the LSU athletic department told ESPN.com that there is no evidence of inappropriate behavior with any current players." http://sports.espn.go.com/ncw/news/story?id=2795145
Pokey left because having that type of relationship with a subordinate is frowned upon in any business situation but even more so in an academic setting. Student athletes are the flagship of our university, in theory, and as such are held to a higher standard for conduct, again, in theory. Having a relationship with a kid in your program (over 18 not withstanding), leads to all sorts of pitfalls. Favoritism, team chemistry, future recruiting, for example are potential problems, and the list goes on from there. Being in love does not excuse this or alleviate the obvious conflict Pokey set herself up for, thus she had to go. I doubt we will have to wait for the tell all book, but I hate it for our school, our program, and for any kid involved. Pokey was old enough to know her responsibility and should be held accountable for any damage resulting from this incident.
Thanks for sharing. If there are any mitigating circumstances to the entire debacle, that is surely one. :thumb:
Article in Shreveport Times about Pokey. Sort of sheds some new light on the situation. http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070311/SPORTS0402/303110007/1001/SPORTS
I don't think the whole story is even close to coming out. I'll bet after the NCAA tournament is over, the truth will come out and it will explode. I think that it is a good thing that we don't know the whole story right now so the team can play their games and focus on winning. I hope that we can recover from this situation.
