Well it's sad that it happened and it's even sadder for us that it happened right before the tourney. I had my doubts when she was staying until April, but the quick "get out of town" is a clear indicator that there is merit to the story. It is with a current player, and the circumstances will come out eventually and will certainly read like a tabloid. News people thrive on drama like this and watching the mighty fall is the favorite pastime in America. I asked several friends today peripherally involved (two directly), with the program, about Mulkey as a replacement and they all emphatically said she would not be hired because she is straight. I have been to some women's games and while I admit there is an obvious...slant to the crowd, I really did not think it would carry this much weight when it came to hiring a new coach. Apparently the coach from Texas Tech, Kristy Curry is a strong candidate, and her sexuality is in line. Amazing the double standard for men and women. How many acknowledged gay men are out there coaching any sport in division 1? Kinda weird to consider and it will be interesting to see if the coaching search plays out like I have been told. I am hearing this from all of my contacts back home, and I must admit to my ignorance of the current situation. I just never paid that much attention to women's basketball until tourney time. Is anyone else back in BR hearing the same rumblings? I certainly don't want to come across as a pot stirrer, just shocked at how quickly all this has broken and how many different people have a great deal of "inside knowledge" about it. It must not have been hidden very well.
So you are saying Curry is gay? I know a family doesn't preclude it, but she does have a husband (who serves on her staff) and a couple of kids.
Nope, only repeating what I was told and did not get Curry's name verbatim, but the coach from Tx tech, and it could easily be an assistant or simply incorrect. Never stated it as fact. Certainly not trying to slander anyone. More interested in who will actually coach and the strange parameters that seem to be set in front of us.
If you do get Curry, it will cause shock waves in Lubbock. One and done would be a blow to the image that Sharp built here over 20+ years. Haven't seen the attendance figures, but the Lady Raiders usually have one of the top 5 nationally in attendance. One reason Curry came to Lubbock was to get closer to home. Baton Rouge is closer yet.
Did anyone catch the onsite ESPN reporter in front of the Pmac? It was the girl with black hair who says ESPN funny at the end of her segment. ESPN is running with this story and I dont blame them because it is the only story that can get some attention on WBB for the Tourney. They had a ranking of the top stories of the weekend and Pokey was in 1st and Dominic Rhodes to Raiders was 2nd.:dis:
Is that so? Well, I can tell you that I know two LSU professors personally that have married former students and there was definitely some "fraternization" going on first. I know accounts of many others. A University is not the military, my friend, nor is it Corporate America. Civil rights are respected. Go to www.lsu.edu and read the Faculty Handbook--nothing on fraternization there. Do a search for sexual harrassment, fraternization, and code of ethics. A bunch of documents on sexual harrassment, but nothing at all on "fraternization". Some LSU departments have "guidelines" concerning fraternization. Here is the English Department's, which is typical. Be cautious. That about sums up the university's thoughts on fraternization. Like I stated before, the U. frowns on sexual relationships between employees and students and also between employees. But it does not prohibit consenting adults from dating other consenting adults, it's not illegal. One of the parties has to complain about harrassment for it to fall under the University sexual harrassment policy, which is very strict. But a tenured professor is not going to be fired for a consentual relationship with anybody. Now, "fraternization" can hurt a professor in departmental politics--promotions, grants, chairmanships, etc. It could affect his research funding under certain circumstances. It could also turn bad--more than one "consenting relationship" has gone sour and harrassment complaints followed. It should be noted that coaches, university administrators, and certain other professionals are not tenured . They are "unclassified" employees and are not protected by tenure or civil service rules (I am one). They "serve at the pleasure of the Board of Supervisors". Such persons can be fired for any reason, at any time, or for no reason at all. Any unclassified employee that brings discredit upon LSU could find himself on the street in an hour. Such is Pokey Chatman's situation. She doesn't have to be guilty of anything to be fired other than making LSU look bad. This is why I'm "cautious" myself. There are 36,000 people at LSU. I have dated LSU employees and students too, but never my students or my employees. It pays to be cautious.
You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but the reality is, this is a factor in women's basketball at LSU. Just because it's too delicate or distasteful a subject, does not mean it does not exist. I suppose we will see if/how it effects our search and eventual hire.
