I think what the Florida game showed which is what I have been pointing out is... a good defense is not enough. If your offense can't get 1st downs you are going to have issues eventually. Florida's offense was showing wear and tear even last year, it's a gimmick. It looks more effective for a while because people were not use to it, now the defenses are adjusting. They still have great personnel. It's a gimmick in the end.
This is a recurring theme going on for 3 straight seasons now. There is only so much hope you can hold out for and then you just throw your hands up in disgust.
Also, those kids for UNC who played in place of the suspended players weren't scout squad players. They were good, talented and were playing with sky high emotion and a "we got nothin' to lose attitue". In many ways they were close to the same level of the starters, just like our #2's are. Those weren't scrubs playing for UNC last night. And their QB played the game of his life as well. Again, the second half wasn't pretty. But before everybody slashes their wrist lets see how much improvement gets made between now & the Vandy game. :LSU231:[/QUOTE] Don't discount that to start the second half, two NFL ready senior linebackers stepped out on the field ready to prove something to their teammates. Added to the depletion arguement, I counted 6 starters and at times with Peterson 7 starters out for a very young LSU team. I hope they find a KO returner and just let him return punts. Maybe Butch Davis planned it that way - to give up so many yards early in order to wear him out in the second half, after all he is muuuuch smarter than Miles right? :tigereye:
Yes we looked bad on offense last night. I don't see what the big fuss is though, everyone KNEW this was going to be an ugly game. At least all the things I read billed it as such. I'm not saying we don't have some serious issues on offense, because we do. But I can't help but wonder had we played McNeese or the likes of for the first game and beat them by 50 instead of NC, if some of the people raising hell right now would be patting the team on the back for putting up big numbers against an out-classed team. It's not easy to start out against a ranked opponent. Am I happy with what I saw last night? Hell no, though I liked SOME things I saw.. We've got some guys that can really, really play but it takes more than just a few. Should I make myself (and others) miserable over a sloppy win? No. At the end of the day, we're 1-0 and it wasn't over some high school team. I think we'll get through Vandy ok, and improve a bit but they better get it together for the 18th. Miss St. is not going to be easy if we play like that, home game or not.
:geaux: I'm just not willing to throw up my hands in disgust & give up on this team after a win in the first game of the season, against a ranked team, no matter how ugly the second half was. Let's see what happens next week. :LSU231:
This! I hosted a bbq party last night and was stunned that people saw the Oregon score (Against the all mighty New Mexico) and were complaining about LSU. How exactly are we supposed to blow out ranked opponents at the same levels as chumps?
No, we're not blind or stupid. I am a fan of LSU and as such, I am stuck with what's out there. I do not wring my hands and gnash my teeth over something I have absolutely no control over. On November 2nd, we will not vote on a new coach. I am an optimist when it comes to sports and I like to think that next week errors will be corrected, players will be one game more experienced and the coaches will spend the entire week trying to get the team ready to play and win. We won the 1st one. You can't win them all without winning the 1st one.
O trust me, I'm not miserable in the slightest. I expected last night to happen that way because that was a trademark LSU win under Miles. So you, with all the other pumpers, enjoy yet another mediocre season with all the talent we have.
Trust me, I know you're not stupid. That's why I know you can't honestly believe improvement will be made since it hasn't for a few years. I don't see Miles waking up and realizing just how bad a coaching job he and his staff are doing. Im not stupid either and think we should blow out every team every week. That will NEVER happen. But im sick and tired of "getting lucky" to barely beat a team that we should beat very easily and last night was definitely one of them. LSU, plain and simple, is not a disciplined team by any means. Every single week its sloppy play and with the talent we "supposedly" have, there's no excuse.
I am not miserable. I am glad we won. But I am tired of seeing a sloppy team that makes 'coachable' mistakes. And I am really frustrated that JJ is the best QB Miles can come up with for the last 2 yrs.
