Yeah he really mangled the last football coaching search. I can't believe we got a guy that was only able to win 22 of 26 games. And why can't this guy put up 50 pts in a bowl game.
The result was great, no one on this board was more happy with Miles AT THE TIME OF HIRING, or now, than me. The search however, was poor.
There's more to being a head coach than that, and we don't know if Pelini would be good at it or not because he's never been one. Pelini would need to cut his teeth somewhere & prove that he's a capable head coach first. Plenty of great coordinators don't make great head coaches.
I'm well aware of the differences between coordinating and being the head coach - and plenty go on to make dynamite coaches, everyone I know that is a coach that has met Pelini says he is indispensable. We have to keep him here whatever it takes.
one coach does not make a program. what are his thoughts on hiring? what would preferences for offense be? how is he at managing a staff? what about his recruiting? i agree he is a outstanding dc. but what other indications are there to what type of hc he would make? edit. i am not saying he will not make a good hc. i am saying we don't know.
Yes, but there's no way to know until they actually get a shot - and LSU is in a position that we don't have to take that guess. Pelini is not a great recruiter. You can't be a great head coach in this league without great recruiting. Indispensable as our DC, perhaps. There are plenty of good DC's out there that a proven head coach could hire, and Pelini would certainly be considered.
I'm aware a HC has to be several things a coordinator isn't required to be..and yet I'm still saying it is my opinion that it would be a big mistake to let him go. If we do, one day we will see him as a HC somewhere and kick ourselves and ask how he got away. It's not that he can't recruit (kids love him, recruits speak glowingly about him when he's involved)..it's that he doesn't like to do it (ie spurrier). He wins everywhere he goes. Again it's my opinion, I'm not saying it off the cuff - I've thought about all the duties required of a head coach...and there are many types of personalities that can be successful as a HC, I think his is one of those. Detail oriented and 100% dedicated (and he is already a better speaker than our current coach...media attention is nice but not the top priority).
This is not accurate. He doesn't like to recruit, and isn't asked to as often as other coaches (although he has been more active this year than in the past)...but he is a fantastic in home recruiter.
What did Miles do to burn those bridges? I've heard what Harbaugh did, but don't remember if Miles did anything similar? I'm still surprised what Harbaugh, a Mich alum, said outloud what outsiders have known for years about the way that program is run.
