That's kind of harsh. I've been an LSU fan as long as I can remember and the actions of a few bad apples would not change my perception of this TEAM. It's not like the PSU Football players were standing guard while this thing occurred but, like PSU and it's fans, I would be calling for heads and restructuring of the program.
The allegations are damning and disgusting. There's no way to color it in a good light. This will be the end of Paterno, and it's sad that such a distinguished career is going to be snuffed out this way. Of course, I've been wishing for 10 years that Paterno would call it quits. He will be ousted (it'd be better if he'd resign.) He'll then be dead within a month of retirement (not what I'm hoping happens, but not surprising if it does, ala Bear Bryant in 1983.)
I think your scenario is possible. Weren't there also other incidents that Paterno "should have" known about but have not yet been proven or admitted (like the 2002 incident)? Could Paterno's decision to keep coaching for the past decade be related to the attempting to maintain control over these incidents rather than accumulating coaching victories?
Ridiculous. If anyone reported this to the police, someone would have talked to Paterno as part of an investigation. It shouldn't have taken more than a week to realize that nothing was being done.
Paterno lives a block off campus, he lives & breathes Penn State, and he is also 80-something years old. Is it plausible that the real control of that football program, not Paterno, made the decision to keep JoePa in the dark as much as possible so as not to disturb the old man? I liken it to a situation if, perhaps, one of my children is accused of being a child molester...I wouldn't run to my father telling him all the gritty details. I would tell him the basics.
You should do some reading. One of Paterno's assistants caught Sandusky raping a minor at the Penn State facilities and reported it directly to Paterno. Paterno and the administration then swept it under the rug while banning Sandusky from bringing kids on campus and the heir apparent to Joe Pa suddenly retired from football. Former Penn State player was just on ESPN saying their were rumors of Sandusky's behavior years ago. The first charge dates back to '99. Paterno isn't as surprised by the allegations as he is trying to make everyone believe. As the police commissioner said Paterno knew long ago and did little to nothing to bring it to the light of day. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/08/sports/ncaafootball/penn-states-paterno-is-not-a-target-in-sexual-abuse-inquiry.html
