There is also Tony Dorsett, Tim Brown, Herschel Walker, and George Rogers was pretty good too, even though he only played in 91 games. You are right though it seems that most heisman winners have gone on to mediocre NFL careers.
Well tirk, thanks for contributing in my name, i'll try to serve you as well as my little gimp body can.
Let's not forget Billy Cannon. Led the AFL in rushing the first two years, led the Oilers to the first two AFL championships, got hurt, played many productive years at tight end for the Oakland Raiders. Then there is the story of Jerry Stovall. I think he finished second in the Heisman voting in '61 or '62, to none other than running back Terry Baker of Oregon. Terry was never heard of again, but Jerry made all-pro years after year with the St. Louis football Cardinals, playing cornerback with Pat Fisher. Jackie Smith was the tight end on that team, he was from a smaller college in La., and Jackie made all-pro a few years, finished up with the Cowboys. John Capilleti from Penn St., running back, was a bust in the pro's.
Nobody has mentioned Roger Staubach. He won the Heisman in 1963 and turned out to be a pretty good pro QB.

Charlie Ward didn't flop, he chose the NBA because he saw that the NFL wasn't really ready for a Kordell Stewart style QB. Bet he is kicking himself now with the Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick etc... type QB's now. I think he would have done well.
Ward's decision to play basketball just might have been influenced by the fact that no NFL team drafted him.
Ward won the Heisman as a senior at Florida State. As a senior with no college eligibility left he dosen't have to "enter" the draft the way a junior who is planning on jumping from college to the NFL would. Seniors are all automatically eligible to be drafted.
But I thought, he opted not to go to the NFL and was therefore drafted into the NBA. I think he made it known to the NFL that he wasn't going to sign and therefore that explains why he wasn't drafted.
