I can't say I'm thrilled about a JUCO punter, as I'd much prefer to have someone already on the team that could do this, but my guess is he will take one of the kickers we signed last years scholarship & this was obviously a need.

If we could swap him out for a current player (kicker or punter) it would appease a lot of fans. Perhaps something is already in the works, much like the Williford situation. I think a JUCO is better at this position than others because there isn't much of a learning curve or big playbook involved. If someone can punt it consistently longer with more hang time than anyone else there is not too much more is involved. I think the kicking camp is a big recruiting tool for the kickers to get noticed and it is in Sailor's interest to sing all of the kids praises that attend his camp.

So is any kicker going to lose their scholarship with this signing? Especially since the two( Jasper and Crutchfield) we signed last year were susposedly top kickers and we were so high on them also.

Although I didn't know about Fisher's bad punt in the 2007 Spring Game, what scared (scares) me most was the aggregate punting suck factor, not individual suckiness.

In the aggregate, the Spring Game punting sucked.

Also, I'm only half worried about distance. For as much as I give Fisher credit for booming us out of horrible situations last year, he screwed us over a bunch of times with 50 yard kicks when a pooch inside the 20 was what the doctor ordered. Fisher just could not make that happen...

Back on point - Spring Game aggregate punting - hated it.

And by "us" I mean LSU, of course. I try not to write like that, but the fanatic in me sometimes takes over...

So, were both highly rated recruits last year flops? One , sure it can happen with any recuits, but BOTH? Is there that much of a transition, if any, from high school to college?

"It's kind of a ridiculous story,'' Helton said, referring to his background. He has only been punting for approximately three years and did not play high school football as a freshman or sophomore. The Hoyt, Kan., native attended Fort Scott and continued punting at the request of his parents, who were seeking an alternate means to finance his education. "I kind of underestimated myself. This is huge for me and my family. (LSU coaches) are expecting me to start if I keep doing what I've been doing.''

Coaches look at hang time. Coaches look at accuracy. Coaches look at directional punting. When he kicks it in the SEC, he's never going to kick it straight down the field. Derek could kick it 60 or 70 yards straight down the field if I asked him to. What LSU is specifically excited about is his hang time.

Both just got here last year, hardly flops. Who's gonna take Colt's place after this season? Either Crutchfield or Jasper, maybe walkon Alleman.

Looks like P-Helton will replace P-Dalfrey.
