Getting into UGA and UF are extremely hard these days. Not Harvard hard of course but much difficult then in the past.

Even with the new requirements, LSU total student body numbers are way up from the days of open enrollment. When I started LSU in 1973 all that was required to attend any state school was a diploma from an accredited high school. That was the way Huey Long wanted it.

Of course, HALF the freshman class flunked out by the end of spring semester, even with all of the remedial courses that were then available. Most never had any business being in college in the first place, others transferrred to SLU, Southern, or USL, etc. where the going was easier, and the rest went back to Metairie and became vice presidents in their fathers business.

LSU now attracts kids who want to learn and can make the grades from the start.

Iwent in the mid-80's. The ONLY requirements for admissions for a Louisiana resident was a high school diploma (OR GED) and that a student TAKE the ACT or SAT. There was no required score for the ACT - the only reason it was required was for initial placement purposes in Math and English.

I remember wading through PAGES AND PAGES of remedial course offerings in Math and English in the Course Guide every semester just to get to the "real" classes. I went to a Catholic school in N.O. and most of my friends were placed in at least one remedial course.

At the time, it seemed like about 1/2 of the kids you knew in your freshmen dorm (Power Hall for me) made it past the second year. Many didn't belong there in the first place and failed out after the first year. As everything was graded on a curve, the first two years were relatively easy. Once you got to your upper level "major" courses in your junior year, the "less than qualified students" were all gone and the curve became much tougher. And, you realized that you would have to study that much harder in order to keep your Freshman/Sophomore GPA.

I was there too when they first brought up the concept of "core" curriculum and a minimum GPA/ACT requirement. There was a HUGE backlash - especially from students that would never have made the proposed minimums. Many estimated that the student population would drop AT LEAST in half - maybe more. And, if the current student population's entrance scores were any indication, the enrollment would have dropped by nearly 2/3rds.

But, rather than instituting the requirements overnight, the administration phased them in over a four year period. The point was to allow high school students the opportunity to see the requirements and plan accordingly IF they wanted to attend LSU.

In the end, LSU hasn't seen any sharp decrease in attendance. In fact, it seems to have stayed constant over the years. In implementing higher standards every year, those students who REALLY want to come to LSU will just make sure that they meet the minimums.
