So, she can't get around skin color and you can't get around hair color. A tad hypocritical wouldn't you say?

I'm sorry, but that's just a ridiculous statement. I'm all for moderation, but the extreme RIGHT wants to: (1) make abortion illegal (regardless of your position on this, it is currently the indivduals choice); (2) tell consenting adults of the same sex what they can and cannot do in the privacy of their own bedroom; (3) push a Christian religious agenda in government when we are a country clearly made up of more than Christians; (4) enact legislation -- the Patriot Act -- which gives the federal government more power to eavesdrop, snoop and generally look into our personal business than ever before, etc., etc., ad nauseum, ad infinitum.

In anticipation of the argument that the foregoing is just representative of persons trying to return "morality" to this country, I say to you my comment is not aimed at whether morality should be an agenda, but simply that moral agendas by their very nature tend to intrude on the lives of indivduals.

Well Mojo, I could counter your argument with some of the anti-freedom things the Left is doing.

The Far Left in this country wants to:

    1) Take away your God-given Constitutional right to own a firearm.
    2) Take away your right to spend your own money as you see fit with outrageously high taxes, and some even want to see a cap on income.
    3) Take away the right of private landowners to do whatever they wish with their own property, and even confiscating private property when "wetlands" are at stake.
    4) Take away the right of parents to raise their own children as they see fit. Attempts are being made right now in California to ban homeschooling and give Social Services agents out there sweeping powers over law-abiding parents to enforce such laws.
    5) Remove every last vestige of religion from public life in this country, basically meaning that religious freedom will only exist in two places; the sanctuary of a church, and in the privacy of one's own home.

The Far Right does often go too far in it's quest, but so does the Far Left, and the Far Left is no less convinced than the Far Right that they, and they alone, can "save us" from ourselves. The difference is, most of the Far Right from what I've seen merely wants the gov't. to ENCOURAGE greater civic morality and responsibility through initiatives, not MANDATE moral codes through legislation.

The Far Left, on the other hand, seems to have no problem at all with making laws to coerce people to their way.

And that, my dear Jetstorm, is why "Right" and "Left" are designated as positions, as they symbolize different places on certain issues. Which in turn lends itself to you and I, and everyone else, having opinions, and in turn again to, I hope, discourse and debate.
You are correct in that on both sides of this particular issue, there are examples of political philosophy attempting to legislatively control an individuals life.

And I almost forgot: Where exactly did God decree that we have a right to own a firearm? I had a lengthy religious education, and I somehow missed that little nugget.

Oh, and one other thing: Religion should be limited to the privacy of one's own home or their church. I would only add that it should extend to any lawful gathering of spiritually similar people. The beauty of this great country is that you are protected in the free practice of your religion. The catch is, I am also protected from any attempt to have your religion dictate my life. What a country!
