That was one of the purposes of the second amendment. First was to insure the people could not be dominated by the federal government. They had just fought a revolution where the first weapons were privately owned. They believed that the people needed a means to resist overweening central government. The second was recognition that in the frontier people needed sufficient firepower to defend against Indians and wildlife. It was a dangerous time and place and they wanted people able to defend themselves whether against the feds or lions and tigers and bears....and Indians. They would support citizens armed with just about anything.
