There are rumors of several potential transfers in the works because of Zook's style. Zook has managed to make some real enemies within the High School coaching ranks in Florida because he reneged on some scholarship offers and then didn't have enough gumption to personally call the players. Several coaches are specifically NOT recommending Florida to their players. It will be interesting to see what will happen if Zook doesn't make it to a decent bowl game this year.
podnuh, Sorry but both myself and A LOT of guru's in the Sporting World disagree with you. Man puh-leeze, Wuerffel did more than just lob the ball up, he, Grossman, and Matthews were the only QB's that were ever able to master Spurrier's complicated offense. Wuerffel's NCAA stats and records speak for themselves, plain and simple, goofy throwing motion or not. There have been a string of UF QB's and A TON of NCAA QB's that weren't able to accomplish what Wuerffel did. He did more than throw the fade route, and he did it better than ANY UF QB ever has or ever will. CFN doesn't list you in it's list of Top 100 College Players of All-Time if you were an "average" QB but had incredibly talented WR's to "lob" the ball to with a goofy throwing motion. http://www.collegefootballnews.com/Top_100_Players/Top_100_Players_37_Danny Wuerffel.htm These were his 1995 junior year accomplishments, I won't even bother posting 1996's even though he won them ALL again and then some. Sorry, but these groups don't give these distinguished awards to average QB's that can only "lob" the ball but have incredibly talented WR's to catch it. *GTE 1995 Football Academic All-American of the Year *Heisman Trophy Finalist (Third in balloting) *Davey O'Brien National Quarterback of the Year Award Recipient *Walter Camp NCAA Back of the Year Recipient (as presented by the Touchdown Club of Washington, D.C.) *Sammy Baugh College Passer of the Year Recipient (as presented by the Touchdown Club of Columbus, Ohio) *One of five finalists for Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year *One of three finalists for the Maxwell Award (nation's top player) *Football News National Offensive Player of the Year *Football News First Team All-America *Associated Press Second Team All-America *Nashville Banner SEC Player of the Year (as selected by the league coaches) *Football News SEC Player of the Year *Associated Press All-SEC First-Team *Coaches' All-SEC Second-Team *SEC Academic Honor Roll *SEC Offensive Player of the Week vs. Tennessee *SEC Offensive Player of the Week vs. Auburn *SEC Offensive Player of the Week vs. Florida State Wuerffel also won the NFL Europe World Bowl while QB'ing the Rhein Fire, funny he didn't have the same incredibly talented receivers he had at UF when he did it. http://www.nfleurope.com/news/2001/week31/08062001_wuerffel.html Wuerffel broke the NCAA record books in 95' and 96'. He broke Jim McMahon's pass effeciency record that had stood since 1984. Tommy Frazier and Charlie Ward were short QB's that couldn't throw the ball 70 yards down field either, but they kicked a$$ and won just about all their games when they were in college just like Wuerffel did. Wuerffel was one of the most deadly accurate passers in NCAA history. And yeah I watched him play, never missed a game his entire career. He was awesome from his frosh year all the way til' his senior year. He also did more than lob the ball up in Spurrier's complicated passing offense that was based on timing patterns/routes. Wuerffel threw bombs, fades, curls, quick strikes, dump-offs, etc, etc while at UF. Spurrier has sent close to 10 average QB's packing during his 11 year stop at UF. Doug Johnson was an average QB at UF, and we all saw what he did, ZILCH. Funny how guys like Wuerffel, Walsh, Ware, Toretta, Dorsey, Ward, Frazier, and Barker all know how to win and win a bunch and set lots of records while doing it, yet because they never panned out in the NFL they were "average". It doesn't matter what a guy does in the NFL, it's what they do in college that matters to me. I could give a rat's a$$ what Wuerffel did in the NFL, his or any other Gator's NFL accomplishments do nothing for my beloved UF. I understand where you're coming from though, Bradshaw was an "average" QB that would be living in complete anonymity right now had he not had Stallworth and Swann to bail his a$$ out at Pittsburgh. Wuerffel was just a product of the Spurrier system the same way Joe Montana was a product of Bill Walsh's system. :dis: :dis: :dis:
Chip and marc, No doubt Zook is a squirrel. He can however recruit with the best of them and the renegging on scholly's goes on all the time in the state of Florida by UM, UF, and FSU. We have so many studs to fight over and so little scholly's to give that you have to do what Zook did, Spurrier did it too and nothing will come of it. Signing day is a waiting game and you have to have back-up plans in place. There were tons of HS coaches in Florida that hated Spurrier but he still got Grade A recruits every year and won every year with them. When we have a kid verbally commit the night before and later that night he gets a new Escalade from FSU we are stuck the next morning when that LOI doesn't come across the fax machine. Same thing if a stud we thought we had no chance of getting calls that day or the night before and says he wants to sign, you do what you have to do to make room for him. Some of these kids can't make up their mind until Signing Day, there is no fault in that, it's a life changing decision. What you are implying is a common occurence in the state of Florida every recruiting season. It's unfortunate but happens every year, as there is just too much talent and not enough scholly's to give out. Next season will be Zook's last unless he loses every game during the remainder of this season and misses a Bowl appearance. Zaunbrecher or Fedora, or both, will be the sacrificial lamb at seasons end to keep the Booster's at bay for now. If the new offense isn't up to par with Strong's defense next year and Zook starts losing again then there is a chance he would be fired midseason. Then Strong would be promoted to HC, that is only if Strong doesn't leave during the off season for a HC job elsewhere. As for transfers we are pretty deep at a few of positions, especially QB and RB. Some guys will be asked to switch positions, if they decide not to and leave, that will free up scholly's for next season.
