    Chip82,

Gotcha. We also had Chan Gailey back then too. Shanahan had a hand in it with the help of Pell and Hall, both Pell and Hall could recruit with the best of them. UF had a lot of great players back then. We didn't just compete in or win the SEC in 84', we were National Champions that year along with BYU but didn't get it due to cheating. We all know who had the tougher schedule out of BYU and UF though.

    http://www.ncaa.org/champadmin/ia_football_past_champs.html

Of course ALL SEC schools were cheating back then, it was out of control. Herschel Walker's dad was paid $250,000 cash to get Herschel to sign with UGA back in the early 80's. None of us were above cheating back then, whether the coaches knowingly participated or not. Most coaches knew their rogue boosters were making big payouts to recruits and their parents though.

FSU still does that and they have it perfected to an art form.

As for Cheatin' Charlie Pell, he learned how to cheat from the best, his mentor Bear Bryant. Danny Ford and Mike Dumbose were some other ones, all of Bear's disciples learned how to cheat from him. I'm sorry but you don't win 12 National Championships without cheating.

What Georgia does the next few seasons remains to be seen. They will have some bumps in the road I can assure you. Richt, Bowden, Amato, and Andrews were/are allowed to get away with murder at FSU. Richt won't be able to do that for long at UGA, a Tiger don't change his stripes. The NCAA lets FSU get away with murder because they have a college football icon coaching there and don't want to tarnish his grandfatherly minister image.

Just the same way the Bear's image was never tarnished even though he was the biggest cheater in NCAA history along with Bowden. The NCAA keeps a VERY CLOSE eye on the SEC now, we are known as habitual cheaters and for having out of control rogue boosters so BluntMan Richt and UGA will be under the microscope during his tenure.

    Soviet Gator,

Bear Bryant also had the luxury of not having a scholarship cap. I can recall games when he had well over 100 players dressed out and just about all were on scholarship.

While I realize that there will always be cut-throat recruiting tactics, the Georgia legislature has now made it a felony for a fan or alumni of any college or university to become involved in college recruiting activities.

The coach that I am most suspicious of is Phil Fulmer.
How he managed to get Brett Smith out of Arkansas still has me puzzled to this very day. And most fans don't know that Tennessee is currently short two Scholarships because of recruiting foul play.

    Chip,

Interesting tidbit about the Georgia legislature.

Phil's day is coming. He also cheated like the Bammers to try and catch up to Spurrier and Florida. The Albert Means fiasco still isn't over yet.

Yeah, I knew about the lack of scholarship cap during Bear's day. When the limit was started he would also sign kids to tennis, track, baseball, and basketball scholarships so they could play football.

Of course all the SEC schools did that back then too, but they learned how from the Bear. The guy was a genius when it came to cheating, half the rules that the NCAA has today are due to the Bear.

He was one coach that was fully aware of what his outlaw rougue boosters were doing. Charlie Mac (Not saying he ever cheated) and Charlie Pell both could have won 12 National Chapionships apiece had they cheated on the level the Bear and Bama did. :dis:

Red always has a great way to express himself. Humbling. What a great feeling for UF to experience.

Have to respectfully disagree with you SG. Wuerffel was an average QB who was surrounded by incredibly talented WRs. All he did was lob the ball up while the WRs got separation and ran under it. Did you ever watch Wuerffel throw the ball? His throwing motion reminds me of my little sister's when we used to play pitch and catch in the backyard.

An average QB surrounded by incredibly talented WRs, and they couldn't be stopped. Maybe Jimbo needs to watch some film and take a few notes.

Careful there marcmc, you are muddying some waters that will get you in a boat load of trouble real quick, and not just from me. There are some regulars here that will eat you up for even insinuating something like that....;) BTW, I know your kidding, but that is a sore subject round here.

Rest assured, it is very sore subject with me as well. I was in Death Valley Saturday suffering through the whole ordeal, and I was one of the ones who stayed until the final seconds ticked away. I have complained all season about the passing game, particularly with the routes we run. I think we have a heck of a lot of talent at WR that isn't being fully utilized. No one disliked the Visor more than me, but I do believe he was and is one of the best. I just think his offensive style is a better fit for the type of skill players we have this year. I'm not saying chunk it 60 times per game, just stretch the field a little and give them room to work.

Spurrier left before a transition year. They would have been better than they were with him last year, but I don' t think they could have won the east. Zook is a nut job, but he has brought in some good young players. I think they should give the guy at least another year to prove himself.

Either way, see what he can do with the talent he brought in. By the way, did anyone besides me see him go off on the a player on the sidelines Saturday (I want to say it was 34, but I'm not positive) and start bumping the guy with his chest and screaming at him. It was kind of hilarious, the guy is psycho. He reminded me of Lou Piniella.
