Mawae is a candidate "near-and-dear" to the program for obvious reasons, it would be interesting to see if his All-Pro abilities in the NFL translate well into coaching, but I wouldn't oppose his hire. It's worth a shot. Sale, also LSU ties, might be the more polished "coach" of the two, ex-Tigers, but not as much name recognition. Coaching hires is definitely one aspect of Miles that I trust (retaining the ones he hires that don't exactly pan out like Stud is different), but over-all, at least for coordinator hires outside of the staff (Pelini, Crowton--for '07 at least, Chavis and Cam) have all been pretty stellar.
Studs has been here a lifetime, in coaching years, look at coaching resumes. Sometimes it's good for both parties to part ways. This will turn out well for both sides.
Agreed. He'll parlay his time here with a better "title" at a smaller program. He'll either go back to the MAC or one of the mid-major conferences with "BCS title, SEC championships, OC experience" all under his belt. He'll get a job and will be at that school for as long as he wants.
I'm torn on Mawae. Part of me wants to roll the dice, other part wonders if the dice was rolled, and is a failure, that's a tough thing to part ways with a guy that is held in such high regard in BR. Honestly he can't be worse than Studrawa.
To be honest, a major positive to hiring a former All-Pro like Mawae is the "shock-n-awe" value he would bring to the table in terms of in-home recruiting visits to O-linemen. Mawae was always regarded as one of the most detail-oriented and prepared linemen and his work ethic and "smarts" seemed to be praised quite often on a national level while he was in the NFL. I would be more cautious with hiring Mawae if the position he wanted was as a coordinator or something higher up on the coaching ladder. But as a position coach? It's low-risk, high reward. Obviously, the other names on the list are more polished from a "coaching" perspective… Of the former Tigers that have applied/interviewed/want to interview, I'd rank em: 1a.) Mawae -- big "name"; long career in NFL; All-Pro; smart player 1b.) Sale -- established coach/recruiter 3.) Big Ben -- smart player; pro career cut short from injury; not the "name" that Mawae is; not the polished coach Sale is
I agree with that ranking of former players, but I still think Andy Moeller has the more impressive resume. If I'm an OL recruit with NFL potential there is no doubt he has the experience to get you there. As a great as Mawae is, his coaching ability is still a huge question mark.
Moeller, unfortunately has had multiple DUIs. Do we need that as a distraction to LSU and the football program?
Exactly. Too much baggage. Dude obviously has alcohol issues. We need someone with their shit together. Anyone car eto guess how long that would come up in recruit's living rooms with mama on the couch. "So mama...have you heard about his DUI's?" Is that someone you want coaching your son for 4 years?"
