Back in the early 90's I had an open pass to practice. Kevin Mawae and Gabe Northern use to keep things lively and moving. It was fun to see these guys jawing at each other
There is absolutely no reason for Mawae to not be prowling the sidelines of Death Valley in this Fall. NONE. Aside from the obvious experience and knowledge the guy will bring to the offensive line and the recruiting advantage, the energy and swag he would bring would be just what this team needs. Make this happen Miles.
Having knowledge and being able to pass that knowledge to young players is two different things. Mawae would be a great hire only if he is a great teacher which is unknown so early in his coaching career. He's more of a gamble than some of the other names mentioned IMO. However if Cam thinks he's ready I'll trust his judgment.
You mean, other than never having coached at all? Why take a chance when there are proven OL coaches out there? Being a great player does not automatically make one a coach.
Yeah, I kind of agree w/that. Like Bhelm said, maybe a year or two as an asst. to get him on board, acclimated, and gauge his ability to coach. I would favor an experienced OL coach right now.
Considering all of the upside, it's a chance you have to take. With all due respect, he's not teaching them to build a nuclear reactor. I'll take the knowledge of an 8 time NFL all pro over any random line coach with limited or no actual experience playing the position. When coach Mawae tells you something about being an offensive lineman, his opinion automatically carries weight because he's been at the top of the game. It will bring in the top recruits as well.
I have to agree. And wasn't he the head of the NFLPA? Don't the players vote on that? Pretty sure they don't just stick some goon in that position. That tells me there is a certain quality of leadership there. Leadership is about 3/4 communication and if you can communicate teaching/coaching sort of just falls on line. I wouldn't balk at the hire
I was just going to post that. He obviously understands communication and is well liked or he wouldn't have held that position. Miles would be a fool to not hire him if he wants the job.
I'm going with LSUDad on this one and whatever Cam recommends, we go with it. Cam knows that the success of his LSU offense is predicated on just how dominant his O-line can be. This hire is pretty crucial.
And it looks like there are some quality candidates out there. I feel much much more comfortable with Cam having a say in the hire.
