We had tornadoes on both Sunday and Monday in OKC. The Monday tornado missed me by 3 miles luckily. Wasn't so lucky on May 3rd 1999 when I went to my SIL's house to miss that F5 because it took her house down to the slab. We were in her cellar though, so we were safe. These things are scary.

I was discussing this today. There is absolutely no excuse why these schools dont have underground shelters. It could be considered criminal.

Do you think that will be a new mandate when the schools are rebuilt? Plaza Towers will forever have a shadow hanging over it with the ghosts of the babies that died there.

How many of you have seen the teacher whose leg was impaled by a desk leg? You can search it on cnn.com. The force of an F5 is unimaginable.

I don't know. Sometimes I just don't understand people. The only way they will build them with shelters is if they pay for them obviously, however it would not surprise me in the least if the people of Moore were to shoot down whatever proposed tax was suggested to do so.

It is beyond belief. I know there are people here that have above ground safe rooms that are supposed to be "F5 proof" but like I said, I will NOT be the MF'r that test that bitch out. I'm going under ground or I'm getting the hell out of dodge. If you try to ride one of these out in a bathtub... well at least you will die with a clean ass. Providing there is time after you shit yourself because these things are wicked scary.

In my current house, I don't have a bathtub that would even begin to qualify as safe. One is on an exterior wall, and the master tub (which could fit the whole family, if needed) is in a bathroom with a skylight.

My master closet is the only windowless interior room (but it's inside the master bath, so the skylight thing is still a concern.

It seemed like a lot of people in Moore had shelters underground. Were many installed after the '99 F5?

The serious concrete shelters can take it with barred doors on the inside.

I would have to think so. Hell they sell them at masive discounts at the state fair every year, the banks have special "storm shelter loans" so that even the less fortunate are able to get one. Look at me, coming up with all the reasons to kick myself in the ass for not having one. I may have to break down and make the call.

You should definitely make the call. Oklahoma just seems to have the most violent weather possible. Fortunately, in North Texas, we're usually just on the edge of the truly bad stuff (though there was that F4 last week south of Ft. Worth and the occasional ice storm.)
