I briefly checked it out and read a few articles. A person could seriously get depressed on that site.

Honestly, I don't really subscribe to the theories of automatic degeneration of society that seem to be the main theme there, but I do believe that the oil situation will force fundamental changes is the economic and therefore, societal structure of this country. The simple fact is that things will not continue to be the same as they are now. What those changes will be is anybody's guess. I don't think you can really predict such a thing, but just being aware of what's going on and at least have some amount of mental or intellectual preparation should help in the adjustment process.

even if the oil peak with shortages and extreme prices were true, it would actually be a great thing for humanity. Now we could meaningfully invest in R&D for alternative energy sources, and actually use them in a meaningful way in society. It has always been purely economics that would drive us away from oil, not the enviro wackos.

This is no where near the end of modern society, only the progression of it. Its going to be an exciting future.

The thing is, the "Peak Oil" theorists claim that alternative sources of energy in their current state of development are not nearly enough to make up for the shortfall (which I agree with), and that there is no longer enough time to develop them with the oil reserves remaining (which is speculation on their part).

The question becomes, IF all this is true, what do we do in the meantime?

The silver lining in this is the fact that if oil production does decline as they predict it will stop and maybe even reverse global warming.

i agree. technology solves all problems. if oil went away tomorrow, 10 years from now we would have replaced it effectively with something awesome.

people love to predict terrible things, i think they think it is fun. they love to preach to us that we need to conserve, recycle, procreate slower. i dont buy it. i say consume everything faster and faster.

also i sort of wish we would run out of oil, because we could return to horse drawn carriages. horses are fun, whenever i see one i pet it. they seem to like that. i wish i had a horse.

Interesting topic. Sure, the world is goig to end. We are all goig to die. And of course, martin is going to burn in hell. :hihi:

If such a thing were to happen, the economy would drop drastically, but as soon as they found a replacement for oil - which I don't suppose would be to much later, the economy would begin it's gradual progression upwards & higher than ever before.

I don't think this situation is as immediate as these folks predict. Books were being written 20 years ago claiming the same thing. Doom & Gloom sells becuase people are dumb & want to get worried about stupid things.

agreed. I would probably get myself a Pinto Horse like Little Joe had on Bonnanza. I would name him Harley and build a stable for him with my two hands.

Child labor can do more than oil could even dream of.
