I'll agree with Cajdav1 about "what are contracts for". It's true. Pro players and coaches--specifically coaches are able to get out of their contracts way too easy.

I think coaches--on both college and pro level should be treated the same as players on the pro level (being both coaches and pro players are getting paid). That being you should not be allowed to speak to anyone under contract.

For players, another team can't talk to them about signing a contract before their current contract is up.

Now to answer your questions (even though I know they weren't directed towards me).

No, I don't think Saban is doing this to "hold us hostage" or to give himself leverage in order to make more money.

and yes, I do believe Saban has earned every cent of what he's made thusfar at LSU.

If TAF wants to pony up another million and bring his earning to $4 million, then so be it. I think he's worth it. But after this, I'll agree with Cajdav1 in saying that we shouldn't keep going up. This, hoping that he does stay with us here, I HOPE is the last "Saban to the NFL" rumor that we hear of for quite some time.

If TAF gives him an additional million, and he stays, then I think he owes us more dedication the next time an NFL team comes calling--and by that, I'm hoping that he would not bring us to the suspense that we've gone through for 2 years in-a-row now.

:dis: :dis: . Pay attention. Unless someone presents evidence that this is the case, quit trying to make Nick out to be the bad guy here.

I was responding to cajdav posts that made it sound like Saban was milking LSU. I don't believe that to be true.

I think you are really senile...

    BostonBengal said it best.

Pay him the extra mil, and then be done with it til his contract is up.

Not senile. Just trying to maintain some semblance of perspective around here. Cajdav says Saban is milking LSU without a shred of evidence to back it up. You respond with "Wow, is he really doing that?" Listen to The Voice of Reason. It will keep you grounded.

It's attitudes like this that run mediocre programs accross the country. Always settle if it means shelling out more money. Never go the extra mile to rise above. Owners like Tom Benson back in the 90's didn't want to shell out money for the team to be better. Non winning attitude.

I think you're really misunderstanding his response, SabanFan. It appeared that he was saying it in a state of shock, like wow you really think that? He didn't say wow is he really doing that, rather wow you really think he's doing that?

BTW, that senile comment was funny. :hihi:

I'm not saying he is doing this ONLY to get more money but it is one of the consequences of him interviewing for other jobs. I am sure he is also interviewing for the position due to his interest in coaching in the NFL. But like the topic of this thread shows, the threat of his leaving in and of itself makes his employer think about raising his salary in order to keep him. If he leaves fine, but if he stays he should be paid what this contract calls for.

I say pay the man! Look what top ceo's get paid. The guy put us back on the map. I've been following L.S.U.football since 1958 and this is the first coach we have really paid. The higher ups always assumed we could hire a middle of the road coach and our tradition and talent rich state would put us over the top. That theory has proven to be wrong!!! If we are willing to pay the crappy Saints to stay, how about paying a real winner? Even if he leaves then it will still show other coaches that success does pay off at L.S.U. Geaux Tigers!

What's lost in all of this is that Miami came to him. Saban is not out there courting NFL owners for a job. This is the exact same situation as last year when the Bears showed an interest. Nick listens to what they have to say. Nothing wrong with that. I am just flabbergasted at the "dig a hole, get in it" mentality around here.
