I don't know what the Lakers should have done concerning Kobe Bryant and his contract. He obviously deserved the contract based on what he had done in the past for the organization. But it also puts themselves in a position of not rebuilding for when the inevitable happens, Kobe's retirement. Which now looks closer than ever.

    So the Lakers are fucked.

This is starting to resemble the end of the Larry Bird era in the early 90s. Bird was the last one hanging around on that great team and when his talents had eroded (not to mention the injuries were mounting) the Celtics had not prepared properly to retool. They would then struggle for the next 15 years before basically buying themselves another championship (the Big 3). They couldn't ever manage to draft adequately and even when they did the deaths of Len Bias and Reggie Lewis were devastating.

Watch the Spurs as they transition from the Parker/Duncan/Ginobli era without much of a blip on the radar. Maybe they don't win 65 games the first year, but I bet they will be competitive and win at least 55.

    I never said that.

He is on his last knee, however.

No he did not. Kobe has been very well paid over the course of his career. What they should have done is this

Tim Duncan is every bit as valuable to the spurs as is Kobe to the Lakers, especially at this point in their respective careers. Duncan plays at well below market value so that the team can afford to put the people around him that can make the TEAM successful. If Kobe cared as much about the Laker legacy as he claims he would follow suit. Like I said previously, I have always been a Kobe fan, still am, but this was a terrible deal for all involved and will get worse before it gets better. He wont sniff another ring unless its one in his jewelry box.

    From Kobe's perspective, that's the part I don't get.

It can't be about the money anymore. It has to be all about putting on that 6th ring for him. Otherwise he has no shot at being put on the same pedestal as Jordan (even though he wouldn't be even if he won his 6th ring as far as I'm concerned).

What do you mean @islstl "it isnt about the money" of course it is. Kobe is a smart enough dude to figure out he isnt making the WCF with that bunch even if he is healthy. That team is hamstrung because of that contract. If the 6th is what he really wanted he just made sure he will never see it.

So, no one here is talking about the Pelicans, good or bad. I am curious from those of you more in the know than me, are we underachieving, injury bug, poor coaching, just need time to gel, are we right where we should be? What's up?

Was there anybody in the known world that was excited when the Nets announced they were hiring Jason Kidd as their new head coach?
