No, we should schedule teams that offer fans some kind of excitement. Even if it's on a small level. A lower PAC-10 , ACC, Big East, etc., team. Most people don't know who the hell Troy is. They will soon, but they don't now. What happens is the team (and the fans) do not get excited and you have a totally flat atmoshphere surrounding the game which can lead to total disaster like it almost did tonight. I don't mind one game against an opponent like this, but three or four in a season??? Hell no! It's almost always boring and not competitive (Appy St., Tulane, North Texas and Troy... what a combo). We have Washington next year (although they're currenly horrible, it's fine because they're a name and in the PAC-10). Other than that we have Tulane, La Tech and ULL. Total snoozer.
I agree with the original poster. It's not about being scared, or about not playing someone because they gave you a game. Either you play a rent a win, or go play against someone relevant. We all know Troy's a decent team, but a win over them doesn't gain you much respect nationally. A loss to them? It will be on the level of the UAB debacle. Go play someone from a major conference instead. They'll give us a game, and there's not as much shame in losing a game to them. As the original poster said, too much to lose and nothing to gain.
Never thought I'd see the day when an LSU fan is scared of Troy. Even in our down years in the 90's. What is this world coming too?
I don't think its so much as the OP is scared of Troy. Its a case of if your going to play someone who is going to give you a game, which for some reason Troy does for us, you mine as well schedule someone who will help your SoS out more. Instead of scheduling a legit mid-tier talent team that is fairly well coached that has to get "taken out behind the woodshed" a few times a year to keep its athletic program going. Why don't you schedule a lower tier BCS school from the Pac-10 or Big East that would actually make our schedule look better to the pollers and computers?
