ok. but what about my question, what do you think we should do with captured terrorists and why not send them to gitmo? you do concede that terrorists exist?

Gitmo = Bush, therefore it's bad. Period.

A lot of uninformed people equate Gitmo with Abu Gharaib. At Abu, prisoners were treated disrespectfully by some troops but the media firestorm made it sound like they were subjected to constant and unrelenting cruelty.

At Gitmo, a couple of high echelon terrorists were "harshly" interrogated in order to elicit information which eventually saved American lives. The media painted that as 24/7 torture for all prisoners.

Gitmo is a prison for terrorists captured on the battlefield, plain and simple. As long as we are at war with terrorists, excuse me, engaged with wrongdoers, Gitmo should remain open and utilized as intended.

agreed. terrorists have to be imprisoned somewhere, not sure why gitmo is a good place for them.

the actual terrorists, ones caught red handed, or ones that are terrorist beyond a shadow of a doubt, imprison them where you caught them, have a quick trial, find them guilty and ****ing kill em.

you seem to be implying that the folks at gitmo are not terrorists. why?

why is the location relevant? why not gitmo?

    justice takes time.

i am not sure why we would want to imprison non-terrorists. why would you assume we would be out there capturing anyone who isnt really dangerous? if i was in the military i wouldnt bother doing that. who does that help?

as far as i can tell, we are capturing and holding terrorists. that is good. i do not like terrorists.

you and me? what sort of point do you think are making here? are you saying it would be cheaper just to build a jail in afganistan or something? you are very non-specific about your points, arent you? i get the impression you are a bit of a media slave, a groupthinker.

what are you proposing exactly? that we shut down gitmo and just hang the accused within a week of capture? that is a decent idea i suppose.

you appear to be more of a critic than a guy with any superior alternative.

i favor the capture of terrorists. and i dont care if they are locked up forever or even if they are killed. and gitmo seems to be a good place as any, especially because it annoys cuba.

in fact i would like it if gitmo because really notoriious and scary and terrorists worldwide are scared of getting sent there. and to be honest i dont give a damn how prisoners are treated there. if people all over the word feel like "i should stay away from any involvement whatsoever with terrorists because those americans will snap up everyone around the terror training camp without asking questions" then that is ok with me.

Very true, but there are objections to Gitmo that go beyond that--the denial of standard US justice including a right to a trial and the "legal" use of torture and other measures that put us in violation of the Geneva Convention.

Actually, most of the gitmo prisoners have been released already because they turned out to be political prisoners or simple grunts just caught up in a war in their country.

Those among them that are hard-core Al Qaida terrorists are international criminals. We have a most excellent justice system, the finest in the world. It requires that we try and sentence criminals. If they are guilty of terror leading to murder, try them, convict them, and execute them. If they are guilty of lesser terrors, try them, convict them and lock them up for life. If they can convince a jury of their innocence, then they should be deported. That's the law and it always has been.

It's only a convenient place to hold them because it is technically not US soil and thus a criminals right to trial and legal representation can be denied.

But there is no reason that they can't be held in a federal SuperMax prison once convicted. There has never been an escape from a SuperMax. It is all solitary confinement and prisoners never come in direct contact with other prisoners or guards. They are in their cell 23 hours a day and get an hour is a solitary exercise yard. No soccer field, no library, and damn few visitors, who they also cannot come in contact with. it's tougher than Gitmo and there is no danger to any American community.
