the non-foxnews press savaged bush on the topics sabanfan mentioned. of course, bush has handled those things perfectly well, especially gitmo, which i think is genius.

this leads to me one of my favorite anecdotes. my dad is pretty old. he remembers when there were german prisoners in his little town growing up, he was like 6 years old or something. the farmers would borrow them to help out, and they were just regular german guys who were drafted, not evil lunatic terrorists. and they were treated well enough, nobody bitched about anything.

me: so they had the germans there
my dad: yeah, not like now, they have to have their damn pita bread blessed by allah.
me: you didnt give the kraut prisoners any halal food or maybe bratwurst or whatever they like?
my dad: we threw em a sack of raw potatoes and said 'go to town boys'. they boiled and mashed em up and seemed to love it and we got no goddamn complaints from the aclu"

Kind of like Obama's plans today, eh?

Yet you rarely step up to that challenge.

Who is trying to change your mind? Dynamite couldn't change your mind. I just defend ideas that I think are good and challenge those I think suck. I don't think anyone here is trying to change anyone's mind. Just trying to influence the elements that they consider.

I wish you would debate more. I'd like to know what you base your notions on. I'd like to think it's based on certain facts, issues, and principles that you understand and have considered carefully. Not just an unbending ideological worldview.

There were a half-dozen German POW camps in Louisiana during the war, one outside the town where I grew up. They worked for 80 cents a day on the farms and in the timber businesses that were depleted of manpower by the war. It gave them soda and tobacco money, they could even buy beer in some camp stores. They even let them come into town to watch the movies, the old timers say. A truck with 20 or so prisoners and one unarmed guard.

But these were low-security POW camps filled with draftees. All of the hard-core Nazi's and SS had been separated into hard-labor prisons out west without these privileges. Any troublemakers or escapees were also sent to high-security prisons.

The philosophy then, as it should be now, is to treat enemy POW's the way you expect the enemy to treat yours. And the Germans, with the exception of the SS, treated our POW's well.

I really don't have the time to research and analyze every little point and counterpoint. This forum is entertainment for me. I check in every once in a while, snap a little jab, then step back. My brain power is exhausted by my job.

when our enemies put on uniforms and fight, instead of creeping into our airports in civilian clothes, then they should be treated like proper POWs.

Well, the Napoleonic Era is over, my man, get used to it. We are going to have even more unconventional enemies in the future and they are going to be taking prisoners. Far better that we pressure enemies to follow our standards than drop to their scumbag levels. Far better for our own POW's.

right. terrorists, the kinda guys who cut off the heads of civilians and blow up buildings packed with thousands of innocent folks, they are thinking: "yunno i was gonna give this dude 3 hots and a cot, and some nice reading materials, but i heard one of our guys was waterboarded so now i am gonna torture him.

when terrorists decided to be terrorists, they threw out the rules. they are not gonna treat anyone well, not civilians, not soldiers, not anyone. they are not gonna torture because of what we do. they are gonna kill and torture because thats what terrorists do.

like i said, if they want to have a civilized war, they can suit up in army of radical islam uniforms and fight like regular soldiers. but they are not regular soldiers, like the germans we mentioned. if we are at war with north korea or something, and we capture those guys, that would be different. unless north korea is sending suicide bombers into our civilian areas.

That's an admirable philosophy, however, our present set of enemies wouldn't care if we put their prisoners in the Waldorf Astoria. They will still behead captured American troops.

There is no victory to be gained in knowing we "did the right thing".
