i cant really address the affect of this, but isnt this (shouldnt this) be part of the ongoing process of tax laws? the gov writes tax laws, companies find different ways to avoid paying them (borderline unethical), then the gov writes new laws. kinda like coaches vs ncaa. i do think that the corporate tax burden should be evenly distributed. seems like companies only operating in the US are getting shafted. id really like a good discussion on this---i like to learn. but im getting tired of the argument that taxing companies decreases jobs and hurts america. just like personal income taxes. then lets only tax poor people, small businesses and wholly US companies. the US would then have every huge company in the world and tons of jobs, and all the poor people will move to canada.
Well first I think we need to all understand the difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion. Tax avoidance is using legal means to reduce your taxable income. Tax evasion is the use of illegal means to not pay taxes. I don't see anything unethical about keeping overseas profits overseas to avoid taxes. I think the contrary is true. Multinationals have to pay taxes and tarrifs everywhere they operate. They then have to pay more taxes just for transferring the profits back home? They are already on even keel with the companies that only operate domestically. They pay the same marginal rates on the income earned here. But it's true. I have a very good friend who is the CFO of a fortune 500 company. They are considering moving their headquarters and two manufacturing plants to Germany now. This would be the straw that breaks the camals back.
I guess I'll break a promise to not hijack this thread anymore. Not gonna argue with you but just let you in on two things. 1. Don't call bush's administration conservative. They were republican but not conservative, just as liberal and dem are not the same thing. 2. I have been consistent on my points. The financial sector had to be bailed out. Period. We go into a depression without it. That is my opinion. Bailing out Automakers or anyone else should not be done. You will not find a case of me saying anything different. Truth is, I would be sitting here bashing the republicans because if they had still been in office, the past administration anyway, they probably would have bailed out the automakers too. 3. I completely disagreed with the presence of tax cuts in the stimulus bill. 90% of americans who get a tax cut will put it straight into the bank right now. Don't make the mistake of thinking I'm an extreme right wing conservative. I'm certainly closer to center than Red anyway.
See we agree on more than we fail to admit. Participating in the FSA has moved me more to the center than ever before. Its some of the extreme people on this forum that amaze me in the their height of hypocrisy.
here's the other (more political) way i think of it. what is more likely? the liberals that managed to get elected are unintelligent and cannot comprehend the outcome of corporate tax structure (in broad terms) despite educated and motivated. or they actually want there to be less jobs. that way the entitlements that they barrack for will be more important. or the proposed changes will increase net revenues and not result in substantial net job losses. and the GOP receives boatload of money from multinational corporations and super-rich individuals so they dont care about closing the loopholes. (who are the Dems in bed with? The Organization for Job Losses? The AFL-CIO and NEA want fewer jobs?)
Please explain how a junior senator from Illinois with previous experience as a community organizer - the writer of a socialist, racially charged autobiography - and a known associate of a former terrorist ISN'T an ideologue? Regardless of the vacillating that's now going on i.e "A single payor system isn't the answer", I have no doubt that I'm right on this issue. He just realizes who writes the checks that keep him in office. That realization doesn't make him any less of a radical.
You have stated yourself that you are a moderate who votes the most moderate candidate into office. I have news for you, the President isn't a moderate. I believe that the highly concentrated population centers have rejected an extreme conservative government. Those centers in no way represent the majority of America's wealth earners, families, or folks who otherwise contribute to the American economy.
The *GOP* receives boatloads of money from multi-nationals and the super rich?!? I can't let you get away with this. ALL politicians get donations from companies and wealthy individuals. Bernie Madoff donated $100,000 to the Democrats -- which they refuse to give back.
Good luck pleading this pretense. Conservative Republicans were in lock step with Bush from the inauguration and went right over the cliff with him. The Bush Neo-conservatives were conservatives. Now that they have failed spectacularly, Republicans wish to distance themselves by saying the the Neocons were not "true" conservatives . . . like they are now, of course.
but the republicans are the ones that are trying to keep the loopholes. i dont care who gets money from who. i care who gets money from who and creates legislation to the donors' benefit at the expense of others. i know the Dems do it to, but we're talking about corporate taxes here.
