It was cited from a Washington Post article from '91, so I believe it. I tried to find a link to the exact article, to no avail. I've read other places that have said the same thing. I think brainwashing is going a bit far, though. I've got no beef with the President making a speech to school children about doing well and staying in school. It's what any leader should do. What I do have a problem with is IF this becomes something political. At least they're releasing the speech early so people know what to expect.
Oh I believe you. You have no reason to mislead me. I agree as well, it should be strictly about education, which is the great equalizer. It shouldnt be about politics. But to scream fire in a crowded theater is just retarted and partisan for the GOP.
Reagan did it about his tax cuts. It was wrong then and it is wrong now. But because the Republicans of today are a bunch of hypocrital nutjobs they won't anty up and state the facts and then explain themselves.
Here's the problem: Dept of Ed "suggested" to teachers that they have students write a letter to themselves about how Obama "inspired" them and how they can help the President. That's a little creepy. Also, they "suggested" that teachers make posters with some of Obama's "notable quotes". Can you say Mao Tse Tung?
It's not a political speech to talk about the value of education to kids. What would the GOP do? Oppose the value of an education. One thing a black president brings to the table is the possibility of reaching black kids who could not otherwise relate. Why not take advantage of this.
That's ridiculous. People are people. Is the opposite true? White kids can't relate to Obama? P.A.S.S. - Civil Disobedience 9/8/09
It's the lesson plans that are disturbing, not the speech, itself. With that being said, my district is posting the speech on the district website, and students can watch at home that way. When the news broke about this on Wednesday night, the local Fox news came to Plano for their story on it. They ended up in front of my middle school interviewing one parent in favor and one against it. Lots of fun.
I didn't realize that when I first read about it. I don't think it's an issue but if what SabanFan says is true, I could understand why the GOP is upset.
White kids have had plenty of white presidents to relate to. Obama is hardly the first president to speak at a public school or to have a live telecast from a classroom. In 1991, President George H.W. Bush spoke to the nation's schoolchildren about the importance of education at Alice Deal Junior High in Washington, D.C.
Oh, it's true. In fact, the WH has already had the "How can I help the president" changed to "How can I help the country". There's a pattern developing and people are beginning to connect the dots.
