This is all correct. We saw yesterday what happens when ND plays a good football team. Yes, I think that Weis is a terrific offensive mind. But the acclaim he's recieved thus far is excessive and entirely too premature, and is really little more than a byproduct of him being at the helm of the media darlings after leaving an NFL dynasty. Their automatic BCS berth is absolute garbage. They should have the same tie-ins that everyone else does in that regard. Oh, they think they're too good to join a conference? Tough sh*t. Either man up and join one, or just accept the fact that you'll only make the BCS if you finish in the top 8 or whatever the rule is. ND doesn't have to share their BCS payout, so it's fair that it should be more difficult for them to break into the BCS. :angryfire Go to hell, ND. Go to hell.:angryfire
Yeah, I think I've been misusing "ours", but I don't remember if I habitually put an apostrophe in there or not. Anyway, in a mild attempt to move back on topic, I'm pretty sure the media will push Notre Dame back into relivence for as long as Charlie Weis is there. Here's hoping that Notre Dame continues to get humiliated in bowl games.
Notre Dame was 6th in the BCS rankings. I think it's (proper usage, hah) ridiculous to say Notre Dame needs to join a conference. Why? Now, I don't think they should get preferential treatment, I would treat all independent teams equally, and in the same way as teams from BCS conferences. I might give special preferences to nonBCS conference teams, but that is a different argument.
What? That didn't make any sense. They do get preferrential treatment. They're guaranteed a BCS bid if they finish in the top 12 or something like that. They don't have to win a conference, or finish in the top 8 (or whatever it is), just finish in the top 12 (and with the media jizz-fest, that is almost a shoe-in every decent year that they have).
Let me try again. I don't think they should get preferential treatment, so on this we agree. This year they were 6th, so it didn't matter. I don't agree with you that they should have to join a conference, just that they should be held to the same standards as teams from BCS conferences.
I'm pretty sure that Notre Dame's BCS agreement right now (I don't have it sitting in front of me at the moment) is that they are qualified, not guaranteed, a BCS spot with a Top 12 finish. They are guaranteed a BCS bid with a Top 6 finish. This is really not a lot unlike the Non-BCS Conference team qualifications. The catch is that they are Notre Dame. If they finish in the Top 12, they are virtually guaranteed a bid because no one is going to pass up on Notre Dame if they can get them. So the unfairness comes with the selection people, and not the rules for Notre Dame.
Evenstill, they have to share their BCS payout with no one (since they're not in a conference). Therefore, the rules surrounding them cracking the BCS should be more stringent, unless they join a conference. I thought ND prided themselves on holding themselves to a higher standard than anyone else?
So, unlike the standing rules, instead of being treated like a nonBCS team you think they should be treated like a BCS team? I agree with that. Are nonBCS teams given special arrangements in comparision to BCS teams? Maybe DarkHornet can shed some light on this. I'm very interested.
