I was watching an episode of Live PD and they said the most commonly stolen item from grocery stores is meat. I recently found out that the Ralph's near me uses alarm tags for the more expensive cuts. The checker said they are actually inserted in the meat but of course that makes it impossible to remove at check out so the alarm is always going off.
The Walmart here uses tags with small cables hooked to it that wrap around the meat packages like a bow.
