No one in LSU's current position has made a better hire than LSU just did with Miles

    JL,

Very good post. I have been pro Saban throughout, and I am willing to give Miles a fair chance, he appears qualified.

But Saban resigns on XMAS day and we're hiring on 1/3/05? Pretty quick. Too quick. Another week would have been more reasonable. Talk to NFL assistants after the regular season ended. Arnsbarger turned out PRETTY GOOD as I recall.

This is what I was referring to as well. I don't have a problem with the hire, just the process. Skip's statements about "huge" names and surprise candidates were probably designed to lift everyone's spirits, but I think it just ends up ticking everybody off. I think it is the single biggest factor of why some are so mad at Saban. He said things and then completely went against them when he left. Skip and Saban may have been better off with little or no comment. I just think people respect that more. On a much smaller scale, it reminds me of the day, we replaced Houston with Arky State. That same day they announced this "series" with OU that no one has ever heard anything about since.

No, truth be told, if the NEXT BIG THING named Ryan Perriloux ends up a Tiger, it's more likely to be because his rather manipulative HS coach cut the package deal w/ Les Miles that he couldn't get with Saban.

Your answer just provided a good bit of insight into what I've suspected of a lot of the suddenly pro-Miles posters on this board are thinking: you're not so much enamored of Les Miles as you are of the rumor that he can bring in Ryan Perrilloux...no matter the cost. That's scary thinking.

The guy asked for viable alternatives to Les Miles. I gave him a couple. Don't like it? Fine, that's your opinion. I've given mine.

This was a question that has been rehashed over and over already. However, I think M Blank's first question is one of the reasons I think his post is one of the best I have read in some time, and I have seen no answers to yet.

    Damn good point Blank.

Your perceived insight into my thinking is completely wrong. Nice try though. Look. I was just using Perriloux as an example. That so-called deal-in-the-making is not something I actually believe until I see it. I am only trying to say that the guy is a winner. We could not hire anyone better away from his program. That's the facts. And, we were not going to get an NFL HC. I'd much rather have a proven winner as a college HC than an NFL assistant.

You need no "insight" into my thinking. It is all right here. Now, give the guy a chance.

Wasn't necessarily singling your way of thinking out. Just that of some people around here. RP's name came up and it made me wonder.

Good thing for schools like Georgia and Oklahoma that they don't share your line of reasoning...otherwise, Mark Richt and Bob Stoops, two of the best HCs in CFB would have never gotten a sniff just because they weren't "proven winners as college HCs".

The good ones aren't hatched, you know. They generally pay their dues as coordinators at some level.

    I respectfully disagree...

I will repeat this again and again, if LSU was going to take a chance on an unproven coach that has never won a championship at any level, then a hot assistant coach (ala Bob Stoops) would have been better. 28-21 does not in my mind prove that you are a proven commodity. LSU also would not have to pay 1 million dollars to take that chance. Les Miles has never done anything in his career that has proved he is an excellent Xs and Os coach like Saban. He was an offensive coordinator who lucked into the OSU job when Dirk Koetter (spelling) backed out at the last minute. I would have much preferred turning the keys over to well respected coordinator at the college or NFL level

According to a post that I read, I believe they were quoting a story in the Times Picayune, the ESJ coach said that is not true, he has no intentions of coming to LSU.
Be careful of those internet rumors.

Perhaps the thought process once interviews actually started last week, was that we decided against hiring a current NFL coach due to the fact that they won't be available to aide in recruiting (Nolan and Crennel are both in the middle of a Super Bowl hunt and outside of 1 week, they'll be distracted with their current jobs).

Sure, Weis is doing it at ND--but I think we're FAR above the Irish these days.

I think we will see right off the bat if miles is a gool coach. If he brings his present D C with him I think we are in trouble. He has proven he cannot get the job done at OSU
