NKorea warns of war if punished for ship sinking

I have told the story befor here, but I havea friend fomr South Korea. His family was split in the 50's and some of them got stuck in the North. The Koreans communicate as best they can, and try to get family from the North into the South.

One of my friends cousins ended up getting smuggled south. When he first saw a map he was shocked at how tiny North Korea was and how huge the US is.

Maps in North Korea depict Korea as controlling most of Asia.

That is really eye-opening to hear a story like that. You talking about controlling every aspect of a persons life, wow.

B.R. Myers wrote a good book about North Korean self-image, The Cleanest Race: How North Koreans See Themselves and Why it Matters

Here is a quote:

The main difference is that North Korea has always tried to convey the impression to the outside world that it is a kind of communist state which seeks integration into the world community, which is very fearful of its own security on the world stage, which wants nothing more than a peace treaty with the United States so that it can get back to its own business of improving the standard of living for its people.

Now, the impression given to the North Korean people themselves, the propaganda they get which most people in the outside world never really learn about, gives a very different impression: that North Korea is a country that will forever be hostile to the United States, which some day will wreak revenge on America — a country that is not afraid of any other country in the world. Rather, the rest of the world is terrified of North Korea. You can read books, for example, about North Korean diplomats barging in on U.N. officials, laying down the law, telling the U.N. what to do and so on. In other worlds, North Korea's depiction of itself is strikingly close to, say, the American depiction of North Korea as a rogue state.

Cajun Sensation I'm kind of a big deal Staff Member

It's unbelievable how isolated and controlled the people of North Korea are. I saw a special where someone snuck into the country and recorded alot of the ways of life of the North Koreans and it was the most covert operation ever. The camera men, for fear of being killed were in hiding and everything was top secret. They then escaped through the mountains and released the tapes where they were shown here. I think it was a special on CNN about a year ago.

The administration and South Korea are seriously stepping up pressure on North Korea.

Hillary is working the Chinese.

Clinton: US Support for South Korea 'Unequivocal'

"First, we endorse President Lee's call on North Korea to come forward with the facts regarding this act of aggression and, above all, stop its belligerence and threatening behavior," said Clinton. "Second, our support for South Korea's defense is unequivocal, and President Obama has directed his military commanders to coordinate closely with their Korean counterparts to ensure readiness and to deter future aggression."

She says the United States and South Korea will explore further enhancements to its joint military posture on the Korean Peninsula.

Additionally, she says that President Barack Obama directed U.S. government agencies to review their existing authorities and policies related to North Korea, to ensure that they have "adequate measures in place," and to identify areas where adjustments would be appropriate.

When asked by a reporter if that included possibly re-designating North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism, she said the United States will "apply the law as the facts warrant."

U.S. Presses China to Punish North Korea for Ship

The Chinese government, the official said, was still digesting the findings of the investigation, which was aided by the United States and other countries. China has reacted with extreme caution, waiting for days to express sorrow to South Korea for the loss of the crew and expressing skepticism about North Korea’s role.

Mrs. Clinton shared information from the investigation with Mr. Dai, the official said. While he said the Chinese were receptive, they had yet to commit to concrete steps against the North. He said that the historic ties between the two countries would make that difficult.

President Obama: U.S. Ready to Fight North Korea - ABC News

Days after North Korea threatened an all-out-war against South Korea, President Obama ordered the U.S. military to work with South Korea to "ensure readiness" and prepare for future aggressions.

"We endorse President Lee's demand that North Korea immediately apologize and punish those responsible for the attack and, most importantly, stop its belligerent and threatening behavior," the White House said.

U.S., Seoul Ratchet Up Pressure on North Korea

"We are working hard to avoid an escalation of belligerence and provocation,'' Mrs. Clinton told reporters Monday on the sidelines of the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue in Beijing. "This is a highly precarious situation that the North Koreans have caused in the region.''

The White House earlier Monday strongly backed a string of measures announced by South Korean President Lee Myung-bak to punish North Korea for allegedly sinking a South Korean warship, the Cheonan, in March.

Mr. Lee said Seoul was severing virtually all of its economic ties with North Korea while banning North Korean ships from South Korea's territorial waters. South Korea's leader also said he had instructed his military to renew anti-North Korean propaganda activities across the Demilitarized Zone between the two Koreas and prepare for heightened joint-military exercises with U.S. forces. Seoul also said it was preparing to bring North Korea's actions to the United Nations Security Council, potentially to enact new sanctions against Pyongyang.
