Agree. His influence is under rated. At a time when music was being made different just to be different; his was different because thats the way it came out of his creative process. He was either authentically strange, or strangely authentic. Have to do Ziggy on the bus ride home tonight.
@Perple Wow, way to go to the other extreme. Wikipedia credits "Queen and David Bowie" as writer and producer of the song. The only studio release of the song was on Queen's album "Hot Space," although Bowie did release it on a live album. Yet when I hear the song on the radio, its usually credited solely to Bowie, or with Bowie being backed up by Queen. "Feels Like", the number Queen was originally working on that was was re-worked along with Bowie into "Under Pressure" was never officially released, although bootleg versions are out there.
From Marilyn Manson to AFI to Kanye West, to Nine Inch Nails, to Puff Daddy and Biggie, he influenced so many.
Feels Like was the song Queen was working on when Bowie came in to the studio and they used that song as the basis. He is largely given most of the credit for the lyrics although it's clear that both Bowie and Freddie were improvising at some point. The bass riff is probably one of the most important aspects of the song and that is ALL John Deacon. mctiger is correct that most of the on-air credit and mention has always gone to Bowie with very little mention of Queen.
I never was a big Bowie fan but I did like some of his stuff. Never cared for Queen at all except for Another One Bites the Dust, which could have been the title of this thread.
Not going to extremes. It's simply a Bowie penned song. "Under Pressure" was officially released as a single in 1981. It was much later (about 6 months later), slapped onto the dreadful 1982 "Hot Space" Queen album. "Mercury manages to ape both Hall & Oates, making David Bowie sound positively soulful" - Rolling Stone review of "Under Pressure" from "Hot Space". www.rollingstone.com/music/albumreviews/hot-space-19820610
You sure about that bass line? John Deacon credited Bowie with writing it. www.openculture.com/2014/06/the-making-of-under-pressure.html
