The $35 milion we have pledged to help the tsunami victims is approximately the amount that will be spent on Bush's inauguration parties. Peanuts. Americans are free to criticize a president's policies if they feel it is important to do so. How the fugg does that constitute "tarnishing the United States' reputation", and by the way, what "foreign interests" is one supporting by exercising free speech? I understand and agree with part of what you are saying. Foreign nations that have enjoyed generous American aid in the past 60 years are ungrateful and unwise to accuse the US of being cheap. To my knowledge, none have done so. But Americans, like the writer cited above, who think we could be doing more are just stating their opinion about how our tax dollars should be spent. This is entirely proper and is in no way anti-American.
It's actually 40 million. :thumb: We aren't paying the bill. Rich Republicans and Democrats who want to be a Ambassador to Figi are. It's 350 billion now, too.
I'd rather it be spent on ANYTHING but foreign aid. parties, pizza, research for blind newts, exposing train robbers, anything BUT foreign aid. they don't deserve it.
Innocent people devestated by a travesty don't deserve aid? You're heartless... I'm not even sure if there's an argument to the contrary - pure & simple, that is plain heartless. "Thousands could be saved if we send money to help? Screw 'em, let's have a pizza party!" :dis: :dis: :dis: Now, some foreign governments don't deserve our aid, and won't be appreciative even when we do give, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't. Morals were a building block of America and part of why we've been so successfull and that's beginning to be lost. Our government has tried, and is always trying to solve our own problems with poverty here in America - that doesn't mean we don't have enough money to help foreign countries in need.
How much should we send? Just don't let it go through the UN because it will be embezzled by Kofi Annon and son, they would be lucky to get 50% of the money. Do you think Bush should cancel his inauguration parties and send that money?
spelling nazi notes: fiji he meant devAstated by tragedy. on to the topic. i dont have any problems with jsracing's position. it is a perfectly rational position. it is hard to argue that is our responsibility to fund the world's disaster relief. and it definitely sucks that the world likes to view us as a big dumb bully, when in reality we are the best thing that ever happened to earth. i am tempted to agree with jsracing, but i concede that the best idea probably to give lots of aid for the tsunami thing so everyone will not hate us even more. if these poor pathetic countries would model their countries after ours, they would have been rich enough to afford tsunami warning.
screw the rest, they aren't grateful, nor do i care. the best thing for us to do is to publically state that we care about the US and no one else. If people want to donate, let them directly give...do not take it out of taxes. We are a giving people but I dont want the government speaking for me by giving my 15 cents much less 15 mill. the more dead that pile up as fish bait, good. I couldn't care less. then again, I've grown a tad insensitive to any place overseas. screw india, they have a large population of muslims I wished were dead as well. maybe next time.
generally the post is a gossip tabloid and conservative propaganda rag, but i will give them props for this one: http://www.nypost.com/commentary/37436.htm " Colin Powell found himself in the position of having to remind the world that over the past four years the United States has provided more such aid than all other nations on the planet combined."
That's India, except for the tsunami warning thing, they are refusing help -saying they can take care of themselves. Yet they are helping the other countries by joining the U.S.'s coalition. That's a very American-like stance. I saw a picture yesterday afternoon of a guy with an Osama t-shirt on watching people remove the bodies. It pissed me off, but one of the great things about America is that as a whole we can look past that and help. The ones that hated us before will hate us afterwards. It would be "un-American" not to help. It's not our job, it's not in our Constitution, but it is in our tradition. Like someone else said it's why America is what it is today. It's also good to see the U.K, China, France, and India step up. It's even greater to see France brag that they are the top donors only to have Britain surpass them the next hour, and for China to follow. But the best is when America bypasses them all and the U.N. and pledges 350 million.
they aren't our responsibility and NO we dont have money left over to send overseas. I am like tirk, if they have extra tax dollars they can spend it at home. No one is lined up to help the good lole US OF A out in bad times.
