Many felt the odds of LSU landing a blue-chip quarterback in this class were not in the Tigers’ favor but Les Miles hit the jackpot on Sunday when Alex Cate of Salt Lake City (Utah) Cottonwood gave him a verbal commitment. Pro-style quarterback Salt Lake City (UT) Cottonwood Height: 6-foot-1 Weight: 200 pounds 40-yard dash: 4.72 seconds "Alex is a gunslinger. I really like his strong arm and quick release and he plays more mature than his age. He shows outstanding confidence and can definitely play at the BCS level." -Former college assistant coach Brian McNeely. looks like we stole a good one. one site has him listed at 183. sounds like he is a bit lite.
I saw his rivals videos, he's a player. Seems to 'manage' a game rather than overpower the defense with plays, which frankly is refreshing. He's got a good enough arm, don't get me wrong - he can sling it...but his success on the videos was due more to him being very accurate and hitting players in stride. He also seems to have a good ability to read the D quickly and pick the right throw, at least his highlights show this ability. If he can do it at 16 years old, he can do it at 18-19 under Jimbo's tutelage.
Utah quarterback commits to LSU By WILLIAM WEATHERS [email protected] Advocate sportswriter Cottonwood (Utah) High School offensive coordinator Scott Cate remembers the day quite vividly. College coaches were making the Salt Lake City-based school a preferred stop on the spring recruiting circuit to get a glimpse of Cate's son, Alex, who is regarded among the nation's top senior quarterbacks. On the very day that assistants from Tennessee and Michigan were on hand to watch the 6-foot-1, 200-pound Cate, LSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher was also in attendance for an evaluation. The elder Cate recalled the look on the faces of all three coaches after the workout was over. "They all had frowns, I wasn't sure what to think ... maybe Alex didn't do too well," said Cate, a former college quarterback at Utah. "Then I walked with coach Fisher back to his car and he told me Alex was going to have to tell him no 10 times." "LSU had the nicest facilities and things like that,'' Cate said. "But more than that I felt comfortable there with the coaches. Coach Fisher and coach Miles were really nice and I just felt comfortable with them." Cate selected LSU over 28 other scholarship offers. He traveled with his father to Oklahoma State, Nebraska, LSU and Arizona over the past week on unofficial visits, finally arriving home late Saturday evening. "When he woke up," Scott Cate said, "the first thing he said was he wanted to go to LSU." http://www.2theadvocate.com/stories/061305/lsu_utah001.shtml He passed for 26 of his 40 TDs in six games against ranked opponents and was poised under pressure in nine two-minute drills -- leading the Colts to eight TDs and one field goal. said LSU's depth at quarterback was more of an enticement than a deterrent. "I thought it would be cool to go and challenge myself by going up in practice with the best," he said. "It's a big challenge and that's kind of why I wanted to go there. To challenge myself against the best."
Beaux, I could not agree more. Given Russell's performance last year why would anyone in their right mind mention his name and leaving early for the pro's in the same sentence??? Last year I didn't see any signs of improvement during the regular season. He did have one good quarter in the Capital One bowl. Was that just a fluke or the beginning of something special. I hope the latter but I'm not as confident as some on this board. I don't want to set myself up for disappointment. Someone mentioned on this thread that anyone on the team could be QB and we would be successful with all our talent. That's just plain idiotic. If we don't have good QB play then our offense will be one dimensional. If that's the case I don't care how fast and talented our receivers are. They will be ineffective. I don't care how great our RB's and OL is. They will be ineffective. LSU may have good talent but so does 4 or 5 other SEC teams. A good QB is a must to be successful in the SEC.
RP isn't playing baseball btw for those of you wondering... IF he wanted to play baseball, he was Miami bound... He is a Miami baseball fan... he... as ironic as it may sound... don't like Smoke Laval hahahah
But he's going to be a mid-term graduate and available to join the TIger's in the spring for Spring practice. I like the guy. Saw some of his highlights on rivals. Good mechanics. Son of a high school coach. HS team was horrible before he got there, took them to the playoffs. Seems to have a good head on his shoulders. Understands that there are already QB's in front of him that he'll have to wait--which is good for us because if RP is as good as he says he is, and turns pro in a few years, then we'll need a QB who's redshirted, and bought his time holding the clipboard charting plays. When Cate becomes a RS-Junior or RS-Senior, he'll have 3-4 years of developement, and should be a solid QB for us in the future. He's someone that doesn't have illussions of starting right away--he's here for his education first, and to become the starting QB 2nd. Welcome aboard Alex Cate!!!
