Dude, I have lived in New Orleans for 14 years. My wife and friends have all lived here 35-40 years. And we're no strangers to the dark sides of town. NONE of us has EVER had ANY of these things happen to ANY of us. So it must be you.
Well, I will say this. First of all, I love New Orleans. I love the city, the people, the culture, the food and the atmosphere. But the 2 worst nights of my life were spent in New Orleans and they were 2 years apart from each other. I will leave it at that. ...On the flip side, some of the best nights of my life were in New Orleans, too. Geaux figure.
The trick is acting like you are from there. If you don't stick out, you usually don't get messed with. A couple of years ago, I was at the back of a group of people (including some out of towners) and started getting harrassed by some gutter punks. I told them I would get them both a free ride to Charity after the chick tried to pat me down for quarters. They looked at me as to see if I was serious, and then decided not to try me. Sad part is, I would have had to start with the chick. She was clearly the aggressor. This is pretty much the only time I have ever really had any problems in the city, other than from the cops. But that was a whole wrong place, wrong time incident.
Let's take a look at this story... 5th graders.... 13-year old boy. He will be: 16 in 8th grade. 21 his senior year. The girls could be just old for their age but still...
This BEGS for elaboration. Like, what type of suicide? How were you mugged? What price did the guy offer on the coke? :hihi:
Found an OD victim by a levee Flew in and took the long ride to the quarter. Checked into the Bienville House and decided to take a stroll. Walked down past the French Market and climbed up on the bank to get a better view of the river. Saw the body just upstream from the market. Witnessed a suicide Canal Street Ferry, A lady tried to take the ferry, but it was on the other side of the river. She went in, and then was gone. Was robbed at JazzFest Had my camera secured in a bag attached to my belt. I reached for my camera and the bag and camera were no longer connected to me. A waiter at the Café Du Monde TRIED to keep the change from a fifty for one cup of coffee/beignets They guy refused to even acknowledge me after I gave him the bill. Kept trying to flag him down, and he continued to wait on others. I had to chase him down, well, corner him, and loudly tell him that I wanted my change, that $50 was a bit much for coffee. And some dude kept following me trying to sell coke for about 30 minutes. Never got to price, kept telling the dude no and he kept following me. Offered to be my guide, and then asked again and again if I want some coke. I ducked into a store to shake him, when I came out, there he was. Did not want to take no for an answer. Finally lost the guy when I went into Pat O'Brien's and stayed for a while. A very strange weekend. I saw the term gutter punks in a thread above. Is that what the guys shooting up on a street corner who started yelling at me are called?
People look at me strange when I tell them I hate N.O. There are few places in this world as sorry as that city (and I've seen some sorry places). The city is an embarrassment, and a tax burden. It is a shame that the good that exist in the city is so much overshadowed by the scum. I am convinced that the good that is there isn't worth saving. I had hopes, after katrina, that the city could somehow rebuild itself in a better way. Those hopes are quickly diminishing. A lot of people are telling me that, overall, it's actually worse than before due to a lot of the decent people relocating elsewhere in the state....while day after day the trash make their way back. N.O. is one of the biggest contributors of why the state's national image is still a joke. It wouldn't surprise me to find out that the little scumbags, that are the subject of this thread, were refugees from N.O. God knows there are plenty of them up here. To quote some parents around newleton..."obviously the teacher was at fault. They shouldn't have left those "kids" unattended." So, you see, the little scumbags aren't to blame for their actions. The parents aren't to blame for their lack of guidance (Hell no, Never place blame on the parents). So, it must be the teacher's fault. Enough rant. It's Easter Sunday. I'm going to play with my children. Good day.
Salty, I look forward to the responses, as I get lambasted every time I even insinuate that NOLA is one big pile of steaming soccer. People are blinded by their love of their "hometown," a concept which incidentally makes almost no sense to me. Glad to see there are other like-minded, objective folks (on THIS topic, anyway :hihi: ) And yep, it's Easter. And I can tell it's Sunday because the wife keeps saying stuff like, "When are you going to get ready?" :hihi: IN A MINUTE!!
Good call there. I was still playing 12 yr-old Biddy Basketball in the 8th grade. 13 in the 5th grade gives him at least 2 failing grades, as I was a year ahead in school. BTW, he won't make it to his senior year.
