Probably the inheritance laws at the time didn't allow a married woman to own property so the ownership passed to her husband when her father died. The law during George Washington's time allowed a widow to inherit her husband's property so Martha Washington was a wealthy woman when she married George. She owned a few hundred slaves while George only owned a few.
