New OC is the biggest hire at LSU since Dinardo blew it hiring Lou Tepper

You can't really tell much from a coordinators first year. In Fishers first year he put up a whopping 10 points on UAB and 3 points on Arkansas. In 2002 he was shut out by Alabama. Arguably, we didn't have as much talent then, but LSU should never be shut out. None of these games were under CLM.

Take a look at the LSU play calling in the championship year to now. Its pretty similar. WR screens and quick slants. In the ND game LSU went down the field far more than normal. I think that was more Miles doing than Fisher. Fisher appears more content at chipping his way down the field. He is far too predictable IMO. Take a look at what Miles did at Ok St, very explosive. I think he will look for someone to fit his mold and we will see the most from the athletes here at LSU.

This is a big hire. OC's & DC's are always big hires. Miles will not stand by like Dinardo and let one coach totally destroy a team. Miles will make a good choice and if he doesn't, he will take control, then he will make changes.:geauxtige :)

I don't think we have anything to worry about. I hope that Miles makes the smart decision and picks someone who he knows can work in any situation, like the SEC will throw at him(her?).

A more pressing concern, for me, is whether or not this coach we get is not just good, but a good recruiter. I know some have addressed this issue, but we need someone with a history of winning, you know, maybe a title...

Anyone know where I can find a coach like that? :p

My guess is that Miles' concern is 2 parts, maybe 3. First of all, almost everyone he brings in is a great recruiter (with Pelini being a notable exception) - that is one of the main things he stresses & so the new OC will definitely fit that definition. The other is that he wants somebody who will have a very productive offense, not "gimmicky", but very balanced. Thirdly, he may get someone who is high profile, as I have heard this is what Skip wants...

I'm not going to downplay the importance of this hire, but I have more faith in Miles getting a quality guy than I did for DiNardo--and that's not hindsight.

CLM was an offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State in the mid '90's before becoming their head coach so even if he doesn't find that "golden boy hire" this year, he could still be in good shape being his own OC if need be. Mark Richt was his own OC for the past few years at UGA, so it's something that can be done--certainly for the short term. Richt is realizing that if he doesn't have to concern himself with doing the play calling AND focusing on coaching the game, that he's better off. So I don't think being your own OC is something that should be done for a long period of time. But the option is still there.

Mile's notable achievements as OSU's OC (these are still OSU records):
Highest scoring ave. per game for a 12-game season: 29.3 in 1995
    Most TD's in a season 46 in 1995
    Most passing TD's in a season 27 in 1995

Now I'm not giving an indorsement for Miles to be his own OC in favor of finding a good one to do it independently, but I'm just pointing out that with Miles, finding a "great" OC for LSU isn't as important as it will be to eventually find Pelini's replacement as DC when the time comes that Pelini becomes a head coach (which might happen in the next year or so).

DiNardo didn't have the same situation. He was a former offensive player and had to attempt to find someone on defense; a position that he obviously didn't know much about.

That's old news. They obviously learned from it because we didn't have a similiar game the rest of the year. No worries.
