I've posted this before, but thats the first thought that ran through my mind when he was named co-DC. I couldn't understand how that was happening. Can't even specifically tell you what, if anything, he's doing wrong in his current position. I don't beleive in splitting such an important position, someone has to be free to make the call. It creates all kinds of accountability problems.
Is that any worse than Saban getting lit up by UGA or Alabama? How about Bud Foster getting lit up by LSU last year? It happens. Randy Shannon is widely recognized as one of the best defensive minds and assistant coaches in college football. Well, we hired BYU's leftovers and hes worked out well. Most coaching hires are someone else's leftovers unless you promote from within. I don't see anyone on this staff that's ready for a DC spot. I wouldn't be against poaching a DC from one of the smaller schools. I know that Patterson is the brains, but Dick Bumpas at TCU, Denny Doornbos at Northern Illinois or Justin Wilcox from Boise State would all be upgrades overwhat we have now I think.
Heres a thought.... The way we lit up Nick Saban's Michigan State team in the independence bowl, why in the world would we ever have picked him to come to LSU? I'm not saying it would 100% work but circumstances, politics and personnel are different at LSU than Miami. Sometimes head coaches over rule what coordinators want to do, I think? :tigereye:
We will get a DC that we want. We have the players to make a great defense, a recruiting class that will be top 3 with lots of defensive studs. I repeat, we will get a DC that we want. The question is the timing. We need to demote/fire these guys the day after the regular season. Try to hire someone within a 1-2 week period and give him 2-3 weeks to try and get us ready for the bowl game. Tough situation, but better than waiting past January to find someone.
The defensive coordinator at VT always has a mediocre recruiting class to deal with, and he consistently has those guys playing strong, not to mention he's put solid DBs in the NFL. For years, VT has had a top ranked defense, unless there's a new guy or something I don't know about.
