The best part is it primarily for basketball post-season, as if Florida State has a chance to venture that way anytime soon!
Why are they WASTING their time and money with this horsecrap instead of finding out a way to make a extra game playoff!?!?!? The PC'ness of the NCAA and the western culture will eventually do this country in by not offending ANYONE... ARHGzsdryhgzdsrouyasietrikquwnbt!~!@$@$&$@*~!!!!
It's all a part of the overwhelming guilt that some still carry around for what some of our ancestors did to that race (American buffalo endangerment, Trail of Tears, and of course, that whole land thing). I'm sorry, but trying to make universtities rid themselves of these kinds of mascots is NEVER going to 'make up' for it. Nothing ever will, it's simply too far gone. I think that it would be more offensive to Native Americans for the NCAA to imply that insituting such a change would somehow compensate for it. If I was a Native American, the only thing that I would ask is for people to quit friggin' calling me an Indian. Just because Colombus thought he was in the West Indies doesn't mean that I should be stuck with that inaccurate monicker for the rest of eternity. But at any rate...yeah, to hell with the NCAA and their B.S. appeasement tactics. How much would you like to bet that no one pushing for this change was actually of Native American descent?
"No, none of my descendants came over on the Mayflower. However, they were there to meet the boat". (Will Rogers)
I would think that the monikers like Warriors and Chiefs, etc. are actually complimentary to the Native American culture--showing them to be tough fighters.
Exactly. I've always felt that way. It's not like they're the mascots of prison football teams or anything else derogatory.
A quick Yahoo search revealed some 21 Tribal Indian Colleges and Universities in the U.S. I couldn't find any with a sports team or a moniker. However, the "intro" to many of these schools is similar to the following: "Dull Knife Memorial College was officially renamed Chief Dull Knife College in September 2001. The College is named in honor of one of the Northern Cheyenne's most respected historical leaders, Chief Dull Knife, also known as Chief Morning Star. Chief Dull Knife, fighting with great courage and against overwhelming odds, led his band of Northern Cheyenne back to our homeland to maintain the sovereignty of our tribe. Reflecting Chief Dull Knife's determination, the College's primary mission is to provide educational and cultural leadership to its constituents." My guess is, if they had a moniker, it would reflect their courage as warriors.
The University of Mississippi just won't be able to keep the name Rebels much longer . . . too offensive to hyphenated Americans. In fact they probably won't be able to use the nickname "Ole Miss" much longer either . . . too offensive to elderly maidens.
I have a sign over my desk at work. It reads------I MAY NOT KNOW THE KEY TO SUCESS, BUT THE KEY TO FAILURE IS TRYING TO PLEASE EVERYONE.-------------
