Number 35 in the second round. It's probably what was expected, although I was hopeful he'd sneak into the first round... What is poetic irony about this draft position is, who else was drafted #35 a few years back? None other than Carlos Boozer. A "larger" power forward from Duke who was a little bit big and "played below the rim". He's made himself into an All-Star. Let's hope Glen can do that too. I don't think it's silly to say though that Glen could have been there. Alot of times the draft doesn't turn out like you expect it to. Case in point, some interesting results for some SEC boys... Derrick Byars of Vanderbilt, expected to be picked in the teens in the first round, falls all the way to the middle of the second. Taurean Green, expected to be a late first rounder, also falls to the middle of the second. Overall, though, I think Big Baby got his fair shake b/c he still got drafted ahead of certain PFs that might have been higher on the board, Josh McRoberts, Jemareo Davidson, etc. Put up this list Glen, these are the guys you'll be compared to in years to come. IMO, he's got a chance to prove that he can be better than the 4 or so guys drafted ahead of him on this list. 2007 PF Draft order: #3 Al Horford #6 Yi JianLian #8 Brendan Wright #9 Joakim Noah #20 Jason Smith #28 Tiago Splitter #31 Carl Landry #34 Nick Frazekas #35 Big Baby Glen Davis #36 Jemareo Davidson #37 Josh McRoberts #38 Kryrlo Fesenko #46 Steven Lasme #55 Herbert Hill #60 Milovan Rakovic :geauxtige :bball: :champs: LSU IS A BASKETBALL SCHOOL. Setting aside some emotional response to this comment, I think when you look at my last post, and what power forwards were drafted ahead of Glen, the reason he fell wasn't even due to "superior" athletes. This statement is sort of uneducated knock at Glen IMO. What appears apparent from the draft results last night were NBA teams wanted height, and towards the end of the first and throughout the second teams took gambles on international players, at the PF position. This is an emerging trend that has occurred in the draft the last few years. When you look at the four PFs drafted ahead of Glen, Jason Smith is close to 7' (but he's a big white guy, who's not as skilled as Glen), Tiago Splitter, another 7' big european guy (who does look pretty big and plays big... S.A. wraps up another nice big international guy), Carl Landry is actually smaller 6'7" ish but quicker option, and Nick Frazekas is another 6'11" big slow white guy. To say that teams drafted these guys over Glen for the "athleticism" is wrong. They drafted them b/c they were "safer" picks at the PF b/c they're at least big. What they aren't used to seeing is Big Baby scoring and beating up on guys who are taller than him night in and night out by using his leverage and quick feet. And, it wasn't crazy to think Glen was first round material. Boston was considering trading up to 21 to grab Glen last night... http://www.2theadvocate.com/sports/8238852.html If Glen can keep his weight down, I personally think he'll be better than some of these guys listed above.
im just happy he got drafted. there are several concerns about glen's potential in the nba, and when you couple that with the fact that there is a large world out there with players none of us know about, he should be satisfied with being picked that high. as fran frascilla said last night, there are better leagues in europe than the ncaa. im sorry however for glen because he has no guaranteed contract, he got drafted by maybe the worst nba franchise, he is missing out on what should be an enjoyable senior yr, he is less likely to get a degree, and it looks like he got worked by the system. did you read that his agent (an old friend thats an agent out of br) was mad at two teams because they said they'd take glen in the first? sounds like he didnt know how the draft works. im a bit surprised about fazekas---but he can shoot. is carl landry, out of purdue, the guy that torched lsu in the ncaa a few years back? remember, dupree's last game.
Bill Simmons, you gotta love his material, is happy the C's got him: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/070629
If Big Baby couldn't keep his weight under control in college, when he had every incentive to do so to try to position himself as a lottery pick, what makes you think he'll put in that effort when he gets signed to a contract? At least, Shaq was in good shape when he entered the NBA before he started balloning up. But, you know what, the Celtics could have done worse given how much the Front Office is in disarray and desperate.
