I compare him to Malone because of the way he backs you down every which way and puts himself in a position to make easy layups. Malone dunked it earlier in his career when he could jump a little higher but when he got older you could see his experience and creativity in the lane. He could still dunk but it was much easier not to with his skills downlow. He used the contact in the lane to his advantage to get the defensive player in positions where they couldnt contest the shots. If baby can do this in the NBA he could have a respectable career. Glenn also has a nice shot around the lane, like Malone. If can get these two abilites in sync, he has the rest of the parts to be a good NBA player. This was also similar to what Barkley did but he dunked it more. Malone had more finess, IMO. Big baby had the finess in college and I hope it can translate to the NBA.
The game element Barkley and Malone had, but Davis is missing (in addition to an above-the-rim game), is the ability to run the floor. Davis never showed the floor speed or stamina to run on the fast break in the college level. The NBA game lasts 8 minutes longer, and is much more of an up-and-down the floor style than college. The comparison to Malone and Barkley you're making pertains to the style of play they showed later in their careers, when their athletic skills were eroding. They were able to stretch their careers further with the tricks-of-the-trade that their years of experience taught them. I'm concerned that Davis doesn't have the raw athletic skill necessary to get him that far down the road.
I think some of you are being a little pessimistic here. I think it's just second nature to compare Big Baby to some of the past guys, like Malone and Barkley, but you're comparing him to two hall of fame caliber guys. There are plenty of folks who get drafted in the first round and have a solid, but no hall of fame career. I see Glen as potentially in that camp. Why? Well, even though he may play "below" the rim, the kid does have some interesting attributes. First, at 6'8-6'9" 290, he's still a load. In the NBA even if you're not 6'10" and jump like a gazelle, plenty of teams need a good low post defender and rebounder guys who just hustle and do the dirty work and can hold their position down low. Look at Udonis Haslem, Kurt Thomas, Charles Oakley, etc. These guys weren't extremely athletic. They were 6'8" to 6'9" and just did the dirty work and have had long NBA careers. Glen I believe also is more polished than any of these guys were at the college level--he's proven that he has a good outside shot, is a decent passer, can drive to the basket and has an array of nice, effective low post moves. He's also proven that he can score (when he's not doubled and tripled and zoned) against guys like Lamarcus Aldridge, Sheldon Williams, who were drafted in the lottery. I actually put him somewhere in that mix of guys--if he came back he could have been a mid-first rounder next year potentially, but if he comes out now he could be a late first rounder/early second guy. He could be a 10 pts, 6-8 rebound guy in the NBA coming off the bench. There's a reason why teams like Philly, Dallas, and others are trying him out. For a NBA team that needs a quality low post rebounder that could also give you a little bit of a low post offense, he could fit the bill at a low first round position. I'm hoping that Glen surprises. I think with his character and ethic, I also think that he can improve. Trim down a little more fat, get his stamina up so he can play at a higher level. I wouldn't hesitate to take him if I'm a contender looking for a bargain at the end of the first. :geauxtige :bball: LSU IS A BASKETBALL SCHOOL. BE A FAN.
i think itll be very interesting to see how he matches up in the nba (hope we get the chance to see). dont forget that haslem didnt make it in the nba as a big guy-they sent him to europe, he lost 50lbs and now he thrives in the upanddown style. id bet thomas and oakley were longer and had more lift. im interested to see how the combination of davis' average height (really, how tall is he?--i wouldnt be surprised if he is under 6'8") and poor lift affects his nba game. i think his D will be more affected. most players he matches up with will either be quicker or able to go over him. i think he has enough skill to be good enough close in on O. while he is nothing like malone was in college (most of you are too young to have seen him in college--he was like augmon, ok that probably doesnt help, he was like...oh hell,i dont know, who watches the nba nowadays?), he could become like malone post-'90.
I think big baby is 6'10 or 6'11 he looks much bigger up close. I do agree he doesnt look that big when watching him on TV for some reason. I am too young to have seen Malone play in college but since Malone is my favorite player of all time I have watched his old games at La Tech and I never missed a Jazz game on tv growing up. I do not see him and big baby as the same in comparison to the same times of their careers. But I do see some of his style match up with Malone of late. I dont think he is anywhere close to his level but I am hoping to see him develop into a Malone type of player. Baby has some of the same tools and if he can utilize them and stay away from the 3 point line he could have a respectable career. Were you talking about Stacy Augmon? If so I only remember him towards the end of his career at Portland, I think. Dont know much about him in his prime.
He's actually about 6'7. Look for the draft measurements to bear that out. Tyrus was clearly taller than he and Tasmin is right there with him height wise.
Every article I could find listed him at 6'9 except for a draft websites that have him at 6'8. I didnt find one at 6'7. http://www.draftexpress.com/viewprofile.php?p=420 http://www.nbadraft.net/profiles/glendavis.asp
he was the best finisher on a fast break that i remember. he was on the great unlv teams. he was pretty similar to pippen with probably a little more length. i saw malone go nuts on lsu, he was the biggest guy on the floor and played like a 2. i think lsu won, but im not sure.
