I think to an earlier post, the name Johnny Jones will be thrown out a bit by Shaq' (in fact, I think I read somewhere he was quoted as saying that) and Daddy Dale. Don't really know what to make out of him, other than he was Dale's right hand man during the Lester Earl deal, and was known more for his recruiting. So, not sure about his coaching genius, but he took North Texas to the Big Dance, and recruited Josh White there. Also was a point guard and may bring a more guard-focused philosophy to Tiger town. Funny thing is, that seems to be where the heads of young coaches like Scott Drew are these days.

    Here's Randy's assessment from today:

I asked the question earlier, so I think it's fair to say that I'm waiting on Butch. You have to get past the initial euphoria/hype of the "emotion" of Brady's firing... then settle in and see what Butch can do. Clearly, he's recruited these kids and there's perhaps a false sense of "stability" in the status quo. At the same time, the administration would be doing LSU a disservice without talking to the best candidates out there.

At this point, Anthony Grant (VCU's coach) and Bennett (WSU's coach), excite me the most for different reasons, and I'm glad Randy is quoting me by putting Xavier's Sean Miller in the mix. It's also interesting to see what Skip and Lombardi could do with a more "established" candidates--like Mike Brey out of ND, Kruger out of UNLV, perhaps. As I predicted, however, LSU does not seem like its about to break the bank on mens hoops. If it's true that they're pulling out of using a search firm, then they seem to be sending the message that they're "saving" their pennies, by taking a few scattered shots at the top young coaches. Chances are if IU makes a change, then they'll sweep up the best "experienced" coach, and leave the young coaches to consider the LSU job. So, as I predicted, with Brady gone, LSU seems inclined to go after a younger, cheaper guy, who's brought in for a change and infuse of enthusiasm BUT which still leaves the program in sort of a tenuous spot. Very unlike the hiring of PM for baseball or VC for women's hoops. The fall back of course, is that Skip can also just let the interim tag for Butch extend another year... All in all tho', I think for the die hard LSU basketball fans that wanted a "set the world on fire" kind of hire, we'll be a little disappointed and nervous about the change.

:geaux::geauxtige LSU IS A BASKETBALL SCHOOL. FOUR FINAL FOURS. GRANT, BENNETT OR MILLER... CAN VCU, WSU OR XAVIER SAY THAT?

Everyone's got a price. What will LSU be paying for a HC? Floyd does have a home there still and his wife and her family are all still there. After a tough home loss to ucla last night, he'll have some pressure, undeservedly but still.

i agree about the guard focus. should be the way to go since the top big men go to the nba earlier. of course, if you have one of those big men your chances of doing great skyrocket.

i still say stick with BP because its a smooth transition. if it doesnt work out, can him in a couple years.

tough loss? it was like the triple aaa version of big ten football/basketball. i found it more than ironic that everyone wore black to that display of offensive basketball.

Missing Hackett was huge. OJ Mayo's head was MIA. Too bad because his mom had come out to watch him play.

The "wear black" thing was part of a Nike promotion. I like the tops, the shorts not so much. I don't know if they'll be repeating it any time soon. My favorite shirt that I saw last night was black with just this on the front:

    Floyd

The ironic part is that USC was still in it up to about 3 or 4 minutes left in the game. At least our women beat the bruins yesterday. Kept them to their lowest point total in ucla history.

Well, the reason the Tigers aren't using a search firm, as reported today by the Advocate...

    http://www.2theadvocate.com/sports/lsu/16020777.html

And, I think I mentioned the Butler coach (see Who Replaces Brady thread a several pages back). :yelwink2:

The Purdue coach, Mark Painter, was highly regarded, but hasn't exactly set the world on fire at Purdue. No.

:geauxtige LSU IS A BASKETBALL SCHOOL. KEEP THE FAITH.
