The basketball teams of the late 70s and early 80s were made up, it seemed, only by guys with nicknames:

    "Doctor" Kenny Higgs
    Floyd "The Dubberly Dude" Bailey
    Lionel "Tree" Green
    Durand "Rudy" Macklin
    DeWayne "The Astronaut" Scales
    Willie "The Black Jet" Sims
    Howard "Hi-C" Carter
    Greg "Cookie Man" Cook
    Ethan "Huck" Martin
    Leonard "Swat" Mitchell

There was a center named Rick Mattick (LSU's first "seven-footer," though he played more like 6-5). Mattick didn't have a nickname, but he had a woeful hook shot that we named "The Sky-Brick."

    In football, how about:

    Bert Jones, "The Ruston Rifle"
    "Miracle" Mike Miley
Ken "Avalanche" Addy (glacier-like fullback from the early 70s)

Didn't Vernal Singleton have a nickname????
I thought maybe he had one because he always had a
    band aid on.

I think he could've been called Rubber-band man.

I remember seeing Andy Campbell in a 7-11 when I was about 12. He was so tall he had to duck underneath the cigarette cabinet over the counter. I swore that he was the tallest guy on earth! Was he taller than Shaq? Or did it just seem like it because he wasn't nearly as big?

I remember Dicky V calling Vernel Singleton "the elevator man" one time but he probably used that on a few others also. Vernel could definitely get up.

I've heard some people refer to Devery as "Hollywood" Henderson. Who was the original "Hollywood" Henderson? I think it was before my time.

He played for the cowboys back in the day. Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson was a LB in the seventies until his career ended because of drug & alcohol addiction. Spent some time in prison in the early eighties, then cleaned himself up and got right with the Lord.

He also played one of the Superbowls while hopped up on cocaine. He had a Vick InHaler which had cocaine instead of Vicks. My dad read his book about his transformation, he said it was a good read.
