Re: TU, is that the best you can do?

You don't get to be the governor of Texas or the President of the United States just because your Daddy was rich and powerful. You might be admitted to Yale because of who you know but you don't graduate from a prestigious Ivy League university without having the intelligence to do it. Would a stupid person be able to parlay a loan of a few hundred grand to buy the Texas Rangers into making himself a multi millionaire by selling the franchise a few years later for a lot more than he paid for it?

I feel at this time that an appology is in order.

I have allowed a few nitwits to distract me from continuing the theme of this thread.

Here's a good one for family values.

"...I quit drinking alcohol in 1986 ..." George W. Bush on numerous occaissions.

1988 (2 years later) - "You fucking son of a bitch. I saw what you wrote. We're not going to forget this." A drunken George W., storming into a Mexican diner in Dallas, and approaching Al Hunt ( Wall Street Journal editor ). Al was dining with his wife and 4 year old son, when Dubya interrupted the family's meal cursing for several minutes in front of everyone.

That's nice... uh, anyway, he always has his environmental record to fall back on.

"We need an energy bill that encourages consumption." George W. Bush, Trenton, N.J., Sept. 23, 2002

OK, scratch that. Looks like all he has is his War record against terrorism.

"I think war is a dangerous place." George W. Bush, Washington, D.C., May 7, 2003

"The war on terror involves Saddam Hussein because of the nature of Saddam Hussein, the history of Saddam Hussein, and his willingness to terrorize himself." George W. Bush, Grand Rapids, Mich., Jan. 29, 2003

Uh... oh. Another signature Dubya foot tasting.

I'm really amazed that not one Bush appologist on this board can find even a single quote from Dubya that is worth posting.

Excellent question. As it turns out a rather stupid, self serving spoiled child of priviledge did just that.

In 1975 Dubya returned to Midland to find his own fortune in the oil fields. Bush had no experience, but he had some seed money from his parents and a network of well-heeled family friends, including Jim Bath a friend of the family who was also the link between the Bush and Bin Laden families (who became principal financiers of his oil ventures.)

Before going into business, however, Bush took a quick detour into politics. In 1978, he ran for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Bush lost the election, but he won the confidence of relatives and family friends who agreed to support Arbusto, his oil-exploration firm. From 1979 to 1983, dozens of investors poured millions into the company and its successor, Bush Exploration. Unfortunately for the investors Arbusto, however, turned out to be a financial failure. By April 1984, the company was $3.1 million in debt.

Does this sound like a capable businessman to you? Looks like Dubya was treating his investors as though they were middle class U.S. taxpayers.

In 1984, Bush sold his business to another Texas oil and gas exploration firm, Spectrum 7. As part of the deal, Bush became Spectrum 7's chief executive officer. But once again, business success eluded Bush and those around him. ( Are ya spotting a pattern here?)Two years after the merger, in 1986, world oil prices, whose decline had hurt many Texas oil producers, plunged even further. Spectrum 7, deeply in debt, was in need of a bailout. As usual, daddyÕs contacts came to his aid and Bush found one.

In 1986 Harken Oil & Gas, an oil exploration company based in Irving, Texas, but financed chiefly with Saudi money bought Spectrum 7. For his part Bush earned $600,000 from the initial sale. He also was made a director and was paid as much as $120,000 in annual consulting fees and received stock warrants worth $131,250 even though he spent much of 1987 and 1988 working on his father's presidential campaign. (Explain to me again how exactly he earned his own way in business)

On January 30, 1990, Due in part to Bush family connections in the middle east, Harken reported that it had just signed an agreement with the government of Bahrain: "Harken Bahrain Oil Co. has concluded a Production Sharing Contract with the Bahrain National Oil Co. The agreement gives Harked the exclusive right to carry out exploration, development, production, transportation and marketing of petroleum throughout most of Bahrain's Arabian Gulf offshore territories" The offshore fields were bordered on one side by a Saudi Arabian deposit with proven reserves of about 7 billion barrels, and a field belonging to Qatar with 2 billion barrels. The Bahraini offshore reserves had the potential to be enormous. (Ultimately, test-drillings found no oil on the offshore Bahraini fields. Who could have guessed?)

Harken ran into financial problems while Bush served on the company's board. (Imagine that) In August 1990, Harken posted a quarterly $23 million loss from its consolidated operations, sending its stock price on a downward spiral. Bush had unloaded two-thirds of his holdings on June 22, 1990, for $848,560. (Insider trading maybe?) He used the money from the sale to pay for his share of the Texas Rangers.

The third unusually easy deal for George Bush Junior was his involvement in the Texas Rangers baseball team. In a nutshell, he was offered a piece of this valuable franchise for only $600,000 by supporters of his dad who also bailed out his failing oil company. He sold his stake for $14 million - while Texas governor -- to a Texas millionaire with lots of businesses regulated by his administration. "When all it is all said and done, I will have made more money than I ever dreamed I would make," Bush told the Forth Worth Star-Telegram after the sale was concluded.

Does this guy sound to you like the kind of winner you want running the business of the United states?

So you don't respect anybody who fails at his first attempt at business but makes good later?

    Like:

Thomas Edison who had numerous failed inventions before he hit on one.

Bill Gates who dropped out of Harvard and was living in a cheap motel room in Tucson before he made the deals that made him the worlds richest man.

Colonel Sanders who had failed at all kinds of businesses before striking it rich at the age of 66 with his chicken recipe.

We all play with the cards we are dealt. If I had been born with the connections that Bush had I would have have taken advantage of them too and no doubt if you had access to those connections you would have done the same. Unlike you, I don't harbor resentment and jealousy toward everybody who happened to have richer parents than I did. Do you really believe that if another stupid, self serving spoiled child of priviledge like AlGore had been elected that you would be better off than you are now?

Is GWB perfect in every way? No. If 9/11 hadn't happened he might have served his term as a mediocre president. On September 11, 2001 the world as we knew it changed. We are at war. Not at war with a particular nation as wars have been fought in the past but we are at war with fanatics who will stop at nothing to destroy us. Here is something for you to think about while you enjoy your cushy life on the Left Coast. Tons and tons of drugs are smuggled into this country every day. How hard would it be for a terrorist group to smuggle small nuclear weapons into this country and explode them in major cities? How hard would it be for a fanatical group of suicide bombers to infiltrate a nuclear facility, an oil refinery or even a packed football stadium and blow themselves up and kill thousands of people? Do you think you're immune from that because you're a liberal?

Whatever past priviledges and kinfolk deals might have paved the way for George Bush in the past, he rose to greatness in his response to 9/11.

Come on Bengal B, ACT LIKE YA GOT A PAIR!

What are you, some kind of a Log Cabin Republican?

You pussies make me sick with your frightened snivvling about how the terrorists are gonna come and get us.

You've got a far greater chance of getting struck by lightning than you do of being killed by a terrorist, yet you piss in your panties at the mere mention of the word while turning a blind eye as a bunch of elitist thugs systematically strip you of the libertys that have been faught over and died for since the days of our founding fathers.

Bush and his gang have you crybabies sitting in a puddle of pee as they spoon feed you lies and half truths about their crooked agenda.

Here's a clue, tough guy, don't listen to what that lying sleazebag Bush says, watch what he does.

These are mean spirited, rotten bastards who couldn't care less about improving our lot in life. They rule by fear and intimidation, just like bullies the world over. They tell you what they think you want to hear while glibly going about their business of making and protecting wealth.

You think they care about stopping terrorism? If they cared about the terrorist threat, would they be exposing the names of their own CIA agents while those agents are entrusted with the ultra high security task of worldwide tracking of weapons of mass destruction? Hell no they wouldn't, but Carl Rove himself let it be known that that is exactly what happened to "punish" Joseph Wilson for exposing the fact that Bush knowingly lied in his state of the union address about Nigerian uranium.

The story is well documented how information was leaked to Robert Novak so that he could air the following: "Wilson never worked for the CIA, but his wife, Valerie Plame, is an Agency operative on weapons of mass destruction. Two senior administration officials told me Wilson's wife suggested sending him to Niger to investigate the Italian report."

The reason this country took such a vicious hit on 9/11 in the first place was because the Bush administration was asleep at the switch. Those opportunistic pricks are not in any way shape or form our best bet in guiding this great nation into the next century. DonÕt let irrational fear rule your life, man. That is simply no way for Americans to live.

Phathead, you are as much of an ignorant asshole as Cottonbowels. I'm not worried for myself about being personally killed by a raghead who thinks he is going to get his 72 virgins. The fact that you can spout your idiocy on the internet proves that you have not been stripped of the freedom to say whatever you want no matter how misguided you and your left coast fruits, nuts and flakes may be. God forbid that you might be ostrasized by your Hollywood crowd for thinking something that smacks of political incorrectness.

Since it looks like "Hanoi John" Kerry will be the Democratic nominee no doubt you will vote for him. Since he is another rich guy born to a life of priviledge and connections will you be as critical of him using his power to make a buck for himself and his friends as you are of Bush? Thats politics. The guy in power gets richer no matter if its Bush, Clinton or whoever. You probably voted for AlGore, another guy born with a silver spoon in his ass. We are lucky we have a president who dosen't cower before the court of world opinion before he dares to make a move against our sworn enemies.

Since you call yourself a "film maker" I would think you have a more than adequate income. Do you actually want your taxes raised to pay for social programs and entitlements to enable homeless bums to live off of what you work to earn?

You might want to use use Novak's own words.

    Novak same story another link

Published in July and does not become a big issue until Sep/Oct. Why the delayed outrage? Could it be because Wilson's comments in July about Bush did not have the desired effect so he decided to use another tactic? Who is Wilson supporting in 2004? Who did he support in 2000?

A few highlights from Novak more at links.

In Phathead's case, I'm guessing "film maker" is an overstatement. Holding a video camera while two naked skanks wrestle around on a mattress in some alley is hardly "film making".

You do not make stuff up do you? You jumped on me because in your own mind you thought I was blaming Clinton for 09/11, but you can just shoot off anything you like because you are an enlightened film maker. Film maker we live in the real world not Hollywood as such we do not make a living making up stories.

    Also

When Clinton's team passed up getting Osama handed to them in 1996 (same year planning for 09/11 started), did not put together a meeting with two of the hijackers in the Phillipines later, passed up a lead in 1999 on one of hijackers with known ties to Osama, and never really acting abroad on first WTC attack, attack on our Navy, helping kill some of our Rangers in Somalia, and attacking our Embassy, were they considered awake at the switch by yourself film maker?
