Mothers on Poydras - Get the Ferdie Special Masperos (Chartres St (?) Overstuffed po boys with Deli style meats Is Charlies Steakhouse (behind Pascales Manale) still open? Now that's a steak. Speaking of Pascale's - Get the BBQ Shrimp. It's Louisiana style Scampi with huge shrimp. Don't leave town without trying the Gumbo Ya Ya at Mr. B's in the quarter. Patout's is good. The one on St. Charles is great, if it's still open. Try the smothered frog legs and the smothered duck. It's done New Iberia style which is the correct style. Damn, I'm hungry now.
OK There is an outside cafe that i like, its in that median by the French Market. It might be called Cafe Orleans. Anyways they have a jazzy band that plays right there in front of you, excellent bloody mary's. its a good spot to people watch. Good light lunch food. actually its a good morning place to start drinking.
You know, I had heard very good things about Jacques-Imo's from more than one person, but when my wife and I ate there we were really not impressed. The service was unattentive and slow (slow I can forgive, not unattentive) and the food was less than impressive IMHO. We really loved the corn bread and the sausage shrimp cheesecake as advertised but both of our main dishes were underwhelming. I had a salad as well but I can't remember what I thought of it (that probably says something). I would recommend the place based on reputation alone. It is entirely possible we caught them on a bad night. We have eaten at Irene's and Emeril's Nola and both are excellent. Irene's is italian with a creole twist and Emeril's is Emeril's. Nola was excellent but his fishhouse (Vegas location) was perhaps the best restraunt we have ever eaten at. We are going to Cafe Giovanni's tomorrow night before the "Phantom" so hopefully I will have a recommendation for that one later.
A friend of mine, who was a lineman for Teurlings when they went unscored on until the University of John Curtis came calling, drank 8 and I had 4 (i'm 160). We both walked away, or should I say we stumbled away?
for history buffs: the D-Day museum. But who wants ot see that during bowl season? Go to Central Grocery on Decatur and get a muffalotta(sp?) best in town. other than that, everything has been covered. Maybe take a day and go take the abita brewery tour, awesome experience. sorry if these have been covered, I didn't read all five pages of the thread.
Stop this! You're killing me! This is no lie: the Roanoke (Virginia) magazine ran a readers' poll of best restaurants in the city and the overwhelming winner was APPLEBEE'S!!! And you know what? They're probably right. SabanFan, we must be separated at birth. When I lived in N.O. my favorite places inlcuded Mother's, Masparo's and Charlie's Steak House - although at Mother's I usually got the "Ralph" (a Ferdie with Zatarain's mustard). LAWD have mercy!
If you need more ideas.. 1. incase of bad weather, d-day museum or the aquarium are both really nice. 2. Best days i've spent in New Orleans have just been hanging out in the quarter. No plans. 3. First timer? BOURBON STREET!!! Don't miss a thing. Pat O's is a must, Razoo's is great, Cat's Meow. If the guys start looking a little too friendly, turn around. 4. If your in front of the cathedral down by the french market and see a group of black guys all dressed alike, stop and sit down. There's a small ampitheater by the street. Those guys are great. 5. Cafe du mond is great for a early morning hang over. 6. Mufellata from central grocery down by the french quarter. 7. BUY YOUR BEADS IN THE FRENCH MARKET. The other guys will screw you! IF NOPD SAYS STOP, SIT, LAY DOWN, IT DOESN'T MATTER, DO IT. Those guys don't take no sh!t. Good people but they are in a tough situation. They have to deal with a lot of drunks. Have Fun
