The difference in maturity between an 18-year-old and an 22-year old is remarkable. Much time and money is wasted by college undergraduates who lack the maturity to tackle college like a job and work at it.

I have recommended to many high school graduates that college will always be there and that taking a few years to go into the service or to an oilfield job that pays a healthy young person well, or even just doing a little roaming and exploring different places and jobs to gain a little life experience is not a bad thing.

It can enable somebody to get a little smarter, less naive, vastly more experienced, and with some cash of their own before starting college. Older students, especially those paying their own way, tend to stay focused, make better grades, and get more out of their educational experience.

I don't know, amigo. What you just describe is liberal idealism versus conservative idealism. The realistic, the pragmatic, and the progressive viewpoints lie with the moderates.

I couldn't agree with you more. There are times that I wish I'd taken a few years off before college. I think hitting the real world before college would definitely give you some perspective and allow you to focus more on your studies.

Agree. Wish I'd done that too. I'd probably still have come out stupid, but I would have been mature enough to handle my own stupidity.

I'm happy I'm going straight through. I'm here to have fun and any knowledge I happen to get on the way is just bonus.

Well, I did too and it worked out great. But I thought about working on the Alaska Pipeline for a couple of years first. Sometimes I wish I had.
