Pretty broad interpretation. My concealed carry class was 99% shooting in self defense. I don’t know if they vary from locale to locale. Based on NC law, WHICH I SUSPECT IS DIFFERENT, the shooter would have 0 grounds to claim self defense at the moment of shooting as captured on video.
Seemed a bit excessive on the surface but I've often wondered at what point of an ass whipping is it time to defend your life. One punch can kill a person, hitting head (falling) on concrete, a root, etc. can cause serious harm and even death. To answer your question, I was surprised, probably as much as the guy who got shot.
Unless I missed something, Guy 1 was yelling at Guy 2s wife that was inside of a car. Guy 2 pushes guy 1. Guy 1 pulls gun. Guy 2 puts his hands up and backs away. Guy 1 fires. If you want to play technical game, Guy 2 was standing his ground and protecting his family/property. I don’t think people realize stand your ground laws aren’t passes to pick fights.
