I tend to agree that religion has done just as much harm to humanity as good. But what happens when atheism become the new dominant "religion" and persecutes those who still believe in magic and voodoo? Will we really be better off?
Most of the biggest violent public protests have come in Syria and Lebanon and there is suspicion that the Syrian government is fueling the unrest.
i dunno. do you think people will blow themselves up in public and instead of screaming "allah ackbar", they will scream "i am doing this for no real reason!" a society based on reason would not persecute anyone for thoughts and beliefs, unless those beliefs caused violence. i dont care what you believe. i wouldnt mind religions if they were peaceful like me. religions are wrong, but i dont care when people are wrong if they would just leave it at that. i dont care if you think 4 plus 4 is 25. but if you believe it to the extent that it makes the world dangerous and everyone divides into tribes and factions and kills each other, then i would care.
i didnt say kill them. i mean to treat religions like any other thing that is wrong and stupid. if i guy goes around teaching people lies i would hope that wouldnt earn him any respect. that is what priests do for a living. they spread lies. why should that be respected? if i went around convincing everyone that wrong information is true, like that we should all drink gasoline for our health or that 1 plus 1 equals 9, i would deserve ridicule. same thing with religion.
I too am an atheist. However, I don't think people who believe in God are wrong and stupid. I don't think that because of my beliefs that I am somehow more enlightnened than someone who prays every night. I also think that if I want religious people to respect me and what I believe, I should respect their beliefs as well. As long as their beliefs do not involve the killing of people who disagree with them.
if they arent wrong then why arent you religious too? and for the record i dont think, religious people are stupid. i'm not more enlightened, because i dont know something they don't know. they are the ones claiming enlightenment. the problem is that they are enlightened with lies. maybe you should respect people who believe in aliens and fairies and astrology and tarot cards and psychics and everyone so they will respect you back. i see no reason to respect lies. i think your mentality is part of the problem with the world. tolerance is bad when it lets lies replace truth. but so often thats what religions do, they kill.
I mean that you take arguments idealistically, not practically. For instance, you look at what should be in an ideal world, but not what's possible with the given circumstances. Most people have an idealistic view, but argue a practical one. Not you. Agreed. Christians overlook that their brothren have killed in the name of God, saying that things are different now. Things aren't as different as they think. Atheism is more accepted than ever. Also, atheism stretches further than ever before, because science can answer more questions than was possible before. Where people don't have to make up god's to find answers to questions. Religion is more rational than ever. It's still not rational - and never can be, but wouldn't you agree that religions are more rational now than 5,000 years ago? I mean, (most) people no longer believe that spirits live in the trees, that god's duel amongst each other or control people's actions. I suppose you'll disagree and say it's just as irrational, but on a scale of irrationality - those rank higher in my book.
Perhaps you don't think they are stupid, but that is what you said in your previous post. So, I am the problen with the world? Not the people who hijack planes and crash them into buildings? I guess if I, and those with similar philosophies, were exterminated the world would be a safer and better place. After all, we cannot tolerate tolerance.
