I know that Bama fans would be excited to hear that RR is their next head coach, and understandably so. However, I would never want a system coach. I'm sure he's a good coach outside of his system, but the truth is, running that spread is how he's made his name.
Agreed. Bama's QB (John Parker Wilson) is not a spread QB, much like Chris Leak who struggled early on with Urban Meyer's spread until Meyer changed it to a more conventional style offense.:dis:
I laugh everytime I see a post giving credence to the possibility of Saban going to Bama. He's just getting his feet wet in the NFL and he hasn't been a flop. Even without a QB, his team is showing improvement. I doubt that Huizenga is giving him any crap and he really has no logical reason for cutting and running. It's an agent's job to look into every single potential opportunity for his client, but that's all it is. Saban ain't going nowhere and my source is unimpeachable. Me. Carve it in granite.
But even in the best-case scenario, meaning that you have the 'right' players in place and whatnot, The Conference will figure you out soon enough. Those gimmicky, system offenses are great for mid-majors. But the big boys have enough talent, discipline, and coaching to keep you honest. System coaches are too reliant on all parts functioning properly, and I'm glad that LSU didn't hire one in Saban's absence. EXACTLY!
Let me give a little background to our less informed readers about Alabama Quarterback John Parker Wilson. Some think he wouldn't thrive in a spread offense but he played his HS football at Hoover HS under Rush Propst who runs a spread offense he learned from the likes of Spurrier, Mummie and Mayer. Hoover's offense is about 65% pass and 35% run. Hoover has thrown for more than 22,000 yards and scored 265 TDs in the last seven seasons, averaging more than 40 points per game. In 2003, Wilson led the Hoover Bucs to the class 6A state title, completing 67 percent of his passes. Wilson hit on 314 of 467 passes for a state record 3,821 yards and 40 touchdowns. He suffered just 10 interceptions. He was selected to the Birmingham News’ Super Senior list. In 2003 Wilson was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Alabama and was named to the 2003 Parade All-American team. For his career, Wilson completed 615 of 978 passes for 8,170 yards and 78 touchdowns. In addition to being an ASWA class 6A and Super All-State selection, he was named 6A Player of the Year by the Montgomery Advertiser and the ASWA back of the year in 6A. Wilson was also a standout baseball player at Hoover and was drafted by the Florida Marlins after his senior year. (turned down 3rd round money - six figures) He was an honorable-mention All-State pick as a junior after passing for 2,800 yards and 27 TDs with just 10 interceptions. Wilson led the Bucs to a 6A State Championship as a junior. Wilson is a competitor and has proven he can take a hit and come back for more. I don't think it would matter to him what offense he was put in he would compete to be the starter and give himself better than even chance of winning the spot.
I didn't know his backgroud but it's not hard for me to believe after watching him against LSU. I thought he was pretty dam good and he passed for right at 300 yds against us.
Yeah, The Conference seems to be chocked full of really, really talented young QB's. Certainly going to make things interesting for the next few years.
Bayoutider, with all do respect i'm having a hard time believing saban would return to college coaching. His desire was to coach in the nfl and has flirted/listened to offers before his tenure before lsu and during his employment at lsu. I have been wrong before and I have met saban on a few occasions but i don't have a clue what his is thinking. is it regrets? At Alabama his every move will be in a fish bowl. Why would he give up all he has for another college job and probably even part ownership in the Dolphins and why would Alabama want a coach that would always looking for his next place of employment. I was proud to have CNS as a head coach, but, i don't miss the annual rumor to the nfl everytime a job came open - iguess it means that your coach is popular and on most everyones most wanted list. I also believe that is it Sexton's job to keep Saban's name out in the world of most wanted coaches this keeps him popular and doesn't hurt his salary either.
True Dat. I don't think that you could find a LSU fan that didn't notice how well that Bama QB played in our game.
